Choices abound for data warehouse and business intelligence today. There are the standard DBMS, specialized DBMS, appliances, and products in almost any color and size. There is clearly a right fit for each and every one of these products, but it still surprises many people that this includes the use of System z. For many years the pendulum for data warehouse has been deep into the camp of distributed databases, but this pendulum is on the move. We will start with a discussion around the general need for analytics today and the role it is playing across industries. We will narrow in on a few important trends - consolidation, modernization, and operational BI, and what is driving those trends. Finally we will look at the role of System z and how it can be applied to help with some of these current and emerging trends.
