DATE: 2011-5-3 (02:00 PM - 03:00 PM)
SPEAKERS: Joseph Burns (Highmark Inc. )

Application programmers and DBAs both have an interest in ensuring good application performance. However, performance issues will inevitably arise and it can be difficult to decide where the problem is. In this presentation we will look at some key performance metrics and how they can indicate what type of performance problem is occurring. We will also discuss solutions to some common performance issues. The emphasis will be on interpreting what the monitor numbers mean, rather than on any specific performance monitoring tool.

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

Review common performance statistics (Class 1, 2 and 3 times, Getpages)

Determine what type of performance issue is occurring.

Diagnose root cause of performance issue (table scan, looping, locking, sync I/O,etc)

Explore possible alternatives for correcting the performance issue

Review of performance issues and solutions
