DB2 LUW Disaster Recovery Solutions: Choices and Lessons Learned (D10)

Topic: DB2 for LUW

Subtopic: 2007

DATE: 2007-5-9 (01:40 PM - 02:40 PM)
SPEAKERS: Charlie Perkins (Fidelity Investments)

The intent of this presentation is to portray the experiences we have had with the DB2-provided Disaster Recovery solutions (SQL Replication, HADR, and, from a performance comparison only, Q-Replication). We initially used SQL Replication as our default strategy, but have recently transitioned to HADR due to its ease-of-implementation and performance benefits. As a case study, I will show the benefits of converting one business-critical application from SQL Replication to HADR, how we accomplished this and what the metrics tell us about our success. Additionally, I provide performance benchmarks from our lab testing of Q-Replication which we may begin to use in certain applications that need a "less than pure" DR solution (for example, they wish to use the DR database for lightweight reporting). The process I will use to build the case for each solution is that of a matrix that will provide a "take away" for those seeking the right DR solution with DB2 LUW.

EXP. LEVEL: Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

Define the practical, low-cost options for providing solid DB2 Disaster Recovery environments

Compare the options and clarify the correct situational fit for each

Provide experiences (with comparitive performance metrics) with SQL Replication and HADR

Show how the options compare in the lab from a performance standpoint (particularly Q Replication) which has not been implemented in our business unit

Build a decision matrix usable by attendees to assist in choosing the right solution
