This presentation describes using DB2 with the new web development framework Ruby on Rails.It starts off by introducing the Ruby programming language and the Rails framework, and why it is rapidly gaining mindshare in the web development community.It then describes the support for DB2 provided by the ibm_db2 adapter, available free from IBM.It then will talk through the development of a simple web spplication using Rails and DB2.It will describe work being done to make the base Rails framework more DB2-friendly. This will include work being done by IBM and by the Rails community including myself.Finally it will look at some issues which need to be addressed in the Rails framework, especially when dealing with legacy databases, and some solutions to these issues.

OBJECTIVES:

What is the Ruby programming language and the Rails application development framework, and what makes them so special

What facilities are available to integrate Rails with DB2 : both from IBM and non-IBM sources

How to develop a web-based application using Ruby on Rails

What work is ongoing, both within IBM and in the wider community, to make DB2 the database of choice for Rails development

How to use Rails with existing databases, rather than for green field development. This includes looking at what improvements are still needed
