SPEAKERS: Vijay Sitaram (McKesson Inc)

In the Business Intelligence platform, DB2 shines in handling multi-terabyte data warehouses in blazing speed. This can be achieved only if the "Best Practices" available today can be applied after customizing it for needs specific to the organization. We look at the Best Practices that applies to different areas involved in successfully building a warehouse like SAN, OS, Database design and applications that load and access data. discuss steps involved in building a data warehouse that is based on Best Practices discussed above in V8.2. Topics such as Model based Tuning is discussed with use of DB2 DWE Cube View Engine. To rev it up, we show the same using DB2 9 with using HASH, Range and MDC for efficient data access. Also use of ASM is discussed to simplify storage management. STMM is discussed to prove it's self-tuning capabilities for large environments. At the end, we go through a collection of lessons learnt from building this warehouse to run a BI platform at Full Throttle!

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

Overview of Balanced Configuration Unit - The motivation behind it for building scalable, efficient and easily maintainable warehouse

Best Practices - SAN & AIX performance:Here we go in detail and discuss how to configure storage devices (specifically IBM FastT storage), & operating specific tunables for DSS workloads (AIX 5.3)

Best Practices - DB2 & SQL Performance:We talk about different layers of performance tuning starting with: physical & logical design, configuration to support ETL and SQL reports and using DB2 Cube Views for Model Based Tuning to generate MQTs

Scaling up - DB2 V8.2 to DB2 9 DPF:This section covers difference in configuration between V8.2 and 9. Discuss using DB2 9 features like Range Partitioning with HASH partitioning and MDC using DPF. Also show the simplicity of using ASM and STMM

BI at Full Throttle - Lessons Learnt:This section consists of a collection of lessons learnt, things to watch for and those to avoid when building a warehouse
