Protecting data from disasters is an important function of a DBA. The type of disaster could range from deleting the wrong rows in a table or to a catastrophic error that causes the primary database to be unavailable. There are many strategies that can be employed and there are varying costs associated with the type of strategy implemented. DB2 V8 offers several solutions in standby database and HADR. There are also hardware solutions like split mirror and frame replication.
