Post-deployment, one of the key tasks in managing a database system is ensuring its availability and performance. This becomes critical when the databases are expected to be up 24x7 and your DBAs work regular work-schedules of 9-5. There are a number of off-the-shelf packaged solutions - both standalone as well as those that link up with enterprise systems management software. However they all come with a hefty price-tag and can be expensive not just in the initial upfron-cost, but also other costs like training and deployment. This presentation is a case study of a simple but effective DB2 monitoring solution that was developed in-house and has been successfully deployed to over 10 databases on Linux/Unix. The presentation will walk through the monitoring solution and discuss the goals and objectives and the approach taken to fulfill them. The monitoring solution covers availability, capacity, performance and change management and disaster recovery preparedness.

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate
