SPEAKERS: Calisto Zuzarte (IBM Toronto Lab)

Complex queries can sometimes be difficult to analyze. For those not familiar with reading an EXPLAIN plan there will be a tutorial on what is important and to look for. This presentation goes through a series of scenarios typically encountered ina a data warehouse environment. It shows what to look for and what steps you might take to improve query performance. For example, some scenarios might exploit the statistical view feature to give the optimizer good information. Others might benefit by defining column group statistics. Perhaps other might benefit with a simple rewrite of the query if you have the flexibility to do so.

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

Present a tutorial on how to read EXPLAIN plans

Identify the key aspects to consider when analyzing EXPLAIN plans

Study various scenarios with actual db2exfmt plan snippets identifying potential performance issues

Identify potential solutions to problems identified

Tutorial that will involve an actual database setup to see problem queries and results of solutions
