Query Optimization Fundamentals - All About Sort and Aggregation (D09)

Topic: DB2 for LUW

Subtopic: 2011

DATE: 2011-5-5 (08:30 AM - 09:30 AM)
SPEAKERS: Calisto Zuzarte (IBM )

This is a back to basics presentation. It describes the architecture of the sort and aggregation algorthms that are currently existing in DB2. It covers how the DB2 optimizer decides to use sorts to benefit various other operations even though the query may not seem like it needs a sort of the intermediate data streams. You will also learn what is different in the Database Partitioned Feature (DPF) environment when dealing with sort and aggregation.Window aggregation and its usage in interesting queries will also be discsused. The objective of this presentation is to familiarize you with how sorts and aggregation are handled in DB2 and better equip you with knowledge that may help you improve query performance

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner

OBJECTIVES:

Learn about basic sort and aggregation in DB2

Learn how DB2 handles sort and aggregation in the DPF environment

Learn how the optimizer chooses to exploit sorts during processing of a query

Learn about window aggregation and interesting usages of this powerful construct

Learn how to improve performance when sorting or aggregation is an expensive aspect of the query plans
