SPEAKERS: Samir Kapoor (IBM )

This presentation is targeted towards advanced DB2 users. It would be most beneficial for Advanced DBAs who are interested in DB2's cost based optimizer and learn how to analyze access plans, to diagnose query performance issues, directly from DB2 devevelopment and support. We'll go into details of 5 different examples from actual customer scenarios and show how we further debugged the situation and what are the things to look for when debugging an optimizer issue. It is mainly forcused on cardinality estimates. We'll show how one can improve the cardinality estimates via different mechanisms available in DB2, eg. runstats, cgs, reopt & statviews.

EXP. LEVEL: Advanced

OBJECTIVES:

Understand situations where to use Column group statistics (CGS) and the enhancements in v95+ in CGS.

Better understanding of where and when to use REOPT to get better access plans.

When and where to use statistical view in order to get better cardinality estimates and improve query access plan.

Will cover enhancements in v97 for troubleshooting query performance problems. Section Actuals and Section explain interface with an example.

To get a better understanding of techniques available to the DBA's in order to enhance query performance.
