Topic: DB2 for z/OS

Over recent years there have been some huge advances in Disk Storage Technology. Despite this many DB2 sites I visit are still using rules of thumb related based more on 3380 and 3390 disks from the 1980's rather than on the modern RAID based arrays such as the IBM DS8300 series they are actually using. A typical example is the thorny question of how many extents an object should use before it is subjected to a Reorg. This presentation explains some of the recent and not so recent technical advances in disk related technology and related changes to the z/OS Operating system. Topics covered include PAV, HyperPAV and MIDAW, along with Software based solutions that exploit these new capabilities such as Flashcopy and GDPS. The aim is to get the audience to review some of their out of date thinking on all aspects of storage technology.
