SPEAKERS: Stephan Terhorst (LVM Versicherungen)

DB2 z/OS V9 has many enhancements under the hood. As a DBA we take care about risk implications during migration and DB2 database maintenance. At LVM Insurance, we implemented procedures that keep us in control of our access paths to insure good SQL performance during V9 migration, refresh pack apply and daily DB2 database maintenance. This presentation shows the methodology used to precheck the access paths changes of all static and dynamic SQL and rate these as better, worsened or equal - before having V9 in production. Only 2% were not decidable automatically. The new IBM Package Stability feature,in combination with our precheck method, allowed us for the first time to do a secure Global REBIND, because now we are able -for the identified 2% to backup the V8 access paths during the V9 REBIND, to be able to fallback in case of a performance problem. The same mechanism is used to secure REBINDs during refresh pack apply and daily maintenance processing.

EXP. LEVEL: Advanced

OBJECTIVES:

Stage a V9 environment in which to do an SQL performance early precheck

Identify the risk of a REBIND Package and store a backup of the access path in the catalog if needed

Show expected access path changes- when migrating to V9- before applying a DB2 Refresh Pack for system maintenance- before daily rebind maintenance

Show access path changes for static and dynamic SQL before they become effective

Opportunities to secure application performance using PACKAGE STABILITY features of DB2 V9 in conjunction with a global REBIND
