Managing DB2 Changes in Minutes (B04)

Topic: DB2 for z/OS

SPEAKERS: Jonathon Herbert (UBS)

UBS developed a change methodology that guarantees a change window of no more than one hour regardless of the type of change. These include destructive changes where millions of rows are unloaded and reloaded, where objects are dropped and recreated. In fact any change can be managed within the hour using this technique, including fallback. At UBS we had to develop such a change technique, as our most important online set of tablespaces, data which is accessed from all over the world by UBS Group interests required DSSIZE changes. A physical change that required the unloading and reloading of almost a billion rows. Our initial estimate, including fallback, was 36 hours. UBS could afford 2. This session will focus and explain how these 'on line' changes are made in a change window on less than one hour.
