You have just been asked to support Unicode in your environment. Maybe it's for a new project in JAVA. Perhaps your CICS/COBOL environment needs to be extended to support a new geography. Maybe you're lucky and a packaged app like SAP is going to be rolled out in Unicode in your shop and the hard work has been done for you.Whatever the reason, when that phone call, email, or knock on the door comes - be ready with the basic knowledge you need to implement Unicode in DB2 for z/OS. This presentation will provide you the background you will need to begin a Unicode infrastructure project. The focus will be on DB2 9 and Unicode application environments.

EXP. LEVEL: Intermediate,Advanced

OBJECTIVES:

Understand DB2 Unicode Capabilities and common pitfalls.

Understand how DB2 and COBOL/PLI Unicode Support work together.

Understand JAVA, ODBC, and other Distributed access to DB2 Unicode data.

When should you pick UTF-8, when should you pick UTF-16, and what are the trade offs.

Get a basic understanding of how to approach a Unicode conversion project.
