zNALC (System z New Application License Charges) is an IBM offering which can potentially reduce the cost of qualifying workloads by more than half. This session describes our experiences at the State of South Carolina with moving DB2 workloads to an LPAR set up for zNALC license charges. It covers considerations, methods, and checklists for successfully moving various types of zNALC-qualifying DB2 workloads (SAP and in-house applications) onto a zNALC LPAR. It also includes our experiences with moving a “mostly Java workload” to zNALC which still included some CICS and batch COBOL. This allowed us to reduce the cost of this workload without having to wait to get a few remaining large CICS and batch COBOL programs re-written in Java.
