DB2 for z/OS has provided Data Compression for several versions now. With DB2 9 for z/OS, you can also compress your Indexes. This can result in significant reductions in your disk consumption. In this session, you will hear about the history of compression, detailed description of data compression and index compression, monitoring the effectiveness of compression, and some hint and tips about when to to take advantage of the different compressions available in DB2

Describe compression fundamentals

Explain how DB2 implements data compression

Describe how a dictionary is created and how data compression uses it

Describe how DB2 implements index compression

Determine if using data and/or index compression accomplishes the the disk savings you were anticipating.
