Topic: 2009 NA

Subtopic: DB2 for LUW

DATE: 2009-5-15 (10:30 AM - 11:30 AM)
SPEAKERS: John Hornibrook (IBM Toronto Lab)

The query optimizer and the query execution plans (QEPs) it generates are key to the performance of the RDBMS. Data Marts and data warehouses based on a star schema implementation pose some interesting challenges to query optimization. This presentation will provide insight into query optimization for typical star schema queries. It will cover how DB design decisions affect QEP selection and provide best practices in the context of QEPs. This will provide the attendee with a deeper understanding of query optimization and skills in interpreting QEPs via the Explain facility.

EXP. LEVEL: Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

DB physical design techniques for star schemas

Insight into query optimization

Skills in interpreting query execution plans using the Explain facility

Understanding optimization for different data organization schemes, such as range partitioned, MDC and daatabase partitioned tables

Understanding specialized star join processing
