Query Tuning with Optimization Service Center (F08)

    Topic: 2008 NA

    Subtopic: DB2 for z/OS

    DATE: 2008-05-20 (04:00 PM - 05:00 PM)
SPEAKERS: Patrick Bossman (IBM Silicon Valley Lab)

This presentation will discuss how developers and DBAs can use Optimization Service Center (OSC) to analyze and tune individual queries and query workloads. Individual query tuning capabilities covered include:- Statistics Advisor to ensure appropriate statistics have been collected- Query annotation to display the optimizer transformed, formatted, and annotated query text.- Query report to generate a table, index, indexed column report to assist with query analysis, as well as index/predicate reports to assist with index analysis.- Visual Explain to perform deep analysis of the selected access path.- Visual Plan Hint to graphically generate an optimization hint.Attendees will also learn how to use OSC to generate a workload to profile an application and generate RUNSTATS targeted to the workload.

    EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate,Advanced

    OBJECTIVES:

Develop an understanding of what Optimization Service Center is, and how it is helpful in tuning query workloads and individual queries

Introduce and illustrate value of Workload Statistics Advisor

Demonstrate value of Query Annotation to show the formatted optimizer transformed SQL statement embedded with critical optimization statistics

Show users how to generate and use new query reporting capabilities for analyzing an SQL statement

Show availability of Visual Explain within Optimization Service Center, and textual explain display capabilities
