All Databases reside on storage. Most storage is nothing but boxes of hardware to most people, but the DBA most go beyond the basic and understand how storage is laid out and the components of the storage design and how it relates to the database. This presentation will present storage concepts and how they relate to the database and some considerations for deploying a database on the various storage devices.

EXP. LEVEL: Beginner,Intermediate

OBJECTIVES:

The Hardware Side of storage. Controllers, storage arrays, HBA's, and the server. Putting the pieces together. Different types of Raids will be discussed

Aix View of Storage. Logical volume manager and how the hardware is seen by the OS

The database view of storage. How storage layouts affect tablespaces, tables and peformance

Understand how multi-partitioned databases require special considerations when designing the storage layout and some special considerations

How backup and recover strategies can impact storage useage. DRP presents storage considerations
