Sensemaking on Streams and What Makes Smart Systems Smart!

Jeff Jonas
Chief Scientist, IBM Entity Analytics
IBM Distinguished Engineer

There are a series of macro trends playing out that are going to force organizations to re-think how they make sense of data and compete. For example, on one hand damage-potential per person is increasing while at the same time organizations are actually getting dumber – an effect caused in part by advances in information technology which help to produce information at rates faster than it can be made sense of. What does this mean? While organizations already recognize that information overload is driving inefficiency, missed opportunity and missed risk, it is going to get so much worse that it is safe to say “no army, of any size, is going to remedy this trend by brute force.” What if it is possible to drive down false positives, drive down false negatives, and make faster predictions over more data...at the same time! Read more here: http://jeffjonas.typepad.com/jeff_jonas/2010/03/on-a-smarter-planet-some-organizations-will-be-smarterer-than-others.html.

Jun 14, 2011 Performance Analysis of Dynamic SQL in a Java Environment
Traditional db2 applications on a mainframe coming through an IMS or CICS monitor are usually running with static, well-tuned and controlled sql-statements. However, these old applications will more and more be replaced by java technology with tools and techniques (JDO, EJB) to implement mapping between relational data model and Java object model. This technique leads to tons of dynamic sql statements, which are often built immediately before their execution. Depending on the performance implementation, monitoring and summarizing of these sql statements can't often be done with available monitoring tools. Therefore, this presentation explains common problems, points out requirements for a analyze tool and demonstrates the analyze process on DB2 z/OS. Samples and experiences of common detected performance problems are included. The presentation also refers to some important DB2 installation parms for DDF communication.

Jun 14, 2011 The Answer to: What Happened? When? Who Did It?
In the everyday world of running a large DB2 installation, many questions need to be answered. Online monitors are great tools for the short-term identification of problems, but cannot help identify trends, or help answer the question: What happened two weeks ago? - there is too little data. On the other hand, the detail in SMF and RMF records can provide these answers, but finding them can be a daunting task - there is too much data. A performance database, which is a summary of these millions of records, is a great tool (with the right amount of data) to answer the longer term questions, as well as identifying trends. This presentation describes how my client's data sharing installation (15 members across 9 LPARs), uses a DB2 performance database - how it is built, updated, and used. The major user-defined report (the Zeroes Report) will be discussed. In addition, future plans for additional user-defined additions to the performance database will be outlined.

Jun 14, 2011 DB2 For Z/OS Stored Procedures: Trends And Technology z/OS
Stored procedures have been widely used for years in DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows application environments. On the mainframe side, adoption of the technology has been somewhat more limited. That situation is likely to change with the advent of native SQL procedures, delivered in DB2 for z/OS V9. This presentation will lay out a vision of a modern DB2 data-serving system in which stored procedures play a very important role. It will also provide a review of DB2 for z/OS stored procedure enhancements, with a particular emphasis on the advantages of DB2 V9 native SQL procedures. The presentation will conclude with some \\"go-forward\\" recommendations.

DB2 z/OS V9 Performance

This presentation looks at the performance impact of DB2 z/OS V9, especially performance scalability of transactions, CPU and elapsed time of queries and utilities, and other performance-related topics.

DB2 9 for z/OS - An Independent Overview

Although DB2 9 for z/OS has not yet been officially announced by IBM, there is significant information available in the public domain. The snag is, this is well spread out and mostly written by IBM - the database vendor This presentation looks at what MIGHT be coming in DB2 9 (no-one knows for sure yet) and what the impacts may be for the future IMPORTANT NOTE Although CA is a business partner of IBM, it is also a signatory to a non-dsclosure agreement. The content of this session is therefore going to cover ONLY what is in the public domain and will NOT address items that may (or may not) be known about the current status of DB2 9

The DB2 Linux, Unix, Windows Query Optimizer

In this presentation John Hornibrook takes viewers into a deep dive into the workings of the DB2 optimizer.

DB2 LUW Storage Management: Technology Preview

This presentation will dive into storage management and administration in DB2 LUW. A detailed, holistic look into storage will be provided, followed by a preview of new exciting features and capabilities planned for DB2's next release.

Topics of discussion will include: Compression to the max - Deep compression gets deeper with index, temp, xml and lob compression along with replication support; Swimming in shallow water - life without the High Water Mark and space reclamation made easy; Line dancing with LOB and XML data; Itty Bitty Reorg - one range partition at a time; Mean and lean MDC.

Native SQL Procedures in DB2 9 for z/OS

A new variation of SQL procedures, native SQL procedures, are introduced in DB2 9 for z/OS. Richer support of the SQL Procedural Language, and attention to the application development lifecycle, offer improved usability and portability. These extensions (including versioning and deployment capabilities) based on new technology can be a favorable alternative to the existing compilation of SQL Procedural Language procedures into an external C language implementation. Since native SQL procedures are managed by DB2 and run within the DB2 engine, there are also significant benefits in terms of improved performance, security, and reduced cost of ownership.

IBM DB2 RUNSTATS Utility and Real-Time Statistics

This presentation reviews the basics of the RUNSTATS utility (What it does; Why you need to run it; How DB2 uses the information), and explores new statistics collected on data and indexes, including: partition level information on Data Partitioned Secondary Indexes; non-uniform distributon statistics on non-indexed columns; and historical statistics. The real-time statistics are also reviewed. Upon completion of this session, the attendee, whose skill level may range from low to high, will be able to understand how to get the most out of DB2's statistics and operate at optimal efficiency.

DB2 LUW Index Design Best Practices

DB2 LUW Index Design Best Practices and Case Studies - this is a recorded replay of a Webinar offered by Scott Hayes at www.DBIsoftware.com.

The Stored Procedure Story

Standard Life has embraced SOA architecture and part of this involved the adoption of DB2 Stored Procedures. Since 2004, the use of Stored Procedures has revolutionised our SOA architecture and application development. This presentation revisits some of the early challenges, both technical and in development terms. Following our successful early experiences, I discuss how our use of Stored Procedures has evolved, particularly the use of SQL/PL Stored procedures and how this has opened up our mainframe to our Java programmers. There have been trips and falls along the way and these are discussed.

The New DB2 Developer Workbench - DB2 Developers Rejoice!

The DB2 Development Center was OK, but it's gone. It's been replaced by the DB2 Developer Workbench (DB2 DWB) - and it's great. You can use this intuitive Eclipse-based IDE to work with XML Schema documents, write XML Schema annotations, build XQuery and SQL statements, build routines, interact with repository systems, invoke comparison utilities, debug and a whole lot of other stuff that one can't fit into the maximum characters allowed in an abstract!

RMF for a DB2 DBA and Systems Programmer

RMF is IBM's strategic product for z/OS performance measurement and management. It is the base product to collect performance data for z/OS and sysplex environments to monitor performance behavior and allows you to optimally tune and configure your system according to your business needs. This presentation will cover basic elements of understanding your DB2 workload, defining essential guidelines with which you can monitor, measure and report the performance characteristics of your DB2 workload.

Solutions for SQL Gone Wild

SQL is the nucleolus of every relational DBMS. Sometimes applications are designed with the specific custom queries; sometimes the queries are generated by a tool and sometimes a mixture of the two. SQL performance is independent of the design source or is it? Over time, SQL performance can become unpredictable. Come see examples of SQL gone wild. Solutions for taming and preventing the phenomena will be provided.

Swimming the DB2 Pools

DB2 contains different memory areas known as pools - RID Pool, EDM Pool, Sort Pool and Buffer Pools. DB2 uses these storage areas for different tasks during SQL processing. This presentation will help clear up the water about the memory pools by explaining what these pools are and how DB2 uses them. It will give you an understanding of how DB2 uses its internal memory. With this knowledge, you will be able to make your system as well as individual SQL perform better.

Getting the Most Out of Your BMC DB2 Utilities

This session will provide a set of tuning and usage recommendations which customers can adopt in order to optimize ease of use, performance, throughput and availability when using BMC DB2 for z/OS Utilities. It is aimed at Users of an Intermediate to Experienced level who have used our utilities for some time and are familiar with the general concepts but who may not be aware of all the fine tuning options available. Subjects which will be covered include areas such as controlling multitasking, minimizing I/O by efficient use of memory, analyzing and tuning SORT processes, sizing workfile datasets, and optimizing Dynamic Dataset Allocation.

Planning Your Migration to V9

DB2 for z/OS Versions 9 and 8 (V9 and V8) have many new features. This presentation will discuss migrating to V9, preparing to use the new functions. We assume that you know DB2 V9. We'll emphasize process and recommendations from many other customers, with pointers to more information. The content of this session will focus on the tasks of the person who installs DB2. Systems programmers and database administrators generally perform this task.

All About Query Optimization - Explaining the Impossible (Part 1 of 2)

The query optimizer and the query execution plans (QEPs) it generates are key to the performance of the RDBMS. But query optimization is often a mysterious process and the choices made by the query optimizer can be difficult to understand. If you've ever wondered how an SQL statement gets optimized and how query execution plans are created, this presentation is for you. Using many QEP examples displayed with the Explain facility, this presentation will cover a variety of optimization topics including query rewrite and cardinality estimation and the cost model.

DB2 HADR - Case Study of Implementation

An in-depth look at using DB2 High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR) in a large enterprise. This presentation will review the HADR technology and walk through the end-to-end process of implementing HADR and automation technology to manage failovers, including: architecture, setup and configuration, testing, and monitoring.

Scrolling, Scrolling, Scrolling - A Short History of Cursors

Cursors have been with us since the dawn of DB2 From their simple origins though (making a set orientated langage compatible with a record orientated one), they have blossomed into tools to allow scrolling through sets of result data This presentation looks at the changes over the years and concludes with an overview of dynamic scrolling and multi-row cursors

LOBs : Stronger and Faster in DB2 9 for z/OS (Part 2 of 2)

Large Objects were introduced in DB2 V6 and have really evolved since then. This presentation provides experiences and lessons learned while writing the IBM Redbook 'LOBs with DB2 for z/OS: Stronger and Faster'. It looks at the new utility features coming along with DB2 9, finally ensuring full support for LOBs. Please note that DB2 data management and application enhancements for LOBs in DB2 9 are covered in LOBs : Stronger and Faster in DB2 9 for z/OS - Part 1 of 2

Tuning Dynamic SQL - Advances with DB2 v8

As web applications continue to grow, tuning dynamic SQL continues to be one of the significant challenges for a DB2 DBA. DB2 v8 introduces a significant number of enhancements to surmount these challenges. This presentation will provide an insight into the new features that help manage SQL performance. Detecting and Preventing Undesirable Access Path Changes When Moving to DB2 V8

SQL response time, throughput and resource utilization are the never ending challenges faced by the DB2 database administrator. Once an acceptable performance level has been established, then avoiding performance degradation when making system or application changes is another challenge which must be addressed. When moving to DB2 V8, users are required to re-bind all plans/packages in the V8 environment. Therefore, the potential for access path changes is one of the major challenges faced by the DBA. Many access paths will undoubtedly change, hopefully mainly for the better. When performing such bulk re-binds, it is clearly impossible to check for and prevent such undesirable access path changes without the help of a tool designed specifically for the purpose. This presentation describes how the EZ-DB2

Episode 9 - The Return of the Hierarchical Empire

The integration of XML in DB2 for z/OS V9 is often called the revenge of IMS. There is some truth in this because XML is a hierarchical structure, which is now integrated into the relational model. A few questions are brought up with this, like -.How do we access the data in XML structures? -.What about indexing to improve performance? -.Are there recommendations for database design? In this presentation, I will highlight first experiences with XML integration in DB2 for z/OS. Additionally, I will provide hints and tips on how to improve performance. Last but not least, I will show you why you should recall your old hierarchical thinking modes to survive in the new fashionable XML world.

If you've ever wondered how an SQL statement gets optimized and how query execution plans are created, this presentation is for you. Using many QEP examples displayed with the Explain facility, this presentation will cover a variety of optimization topics including query rewrite and cardinality estimation and the cost model.

Choosing the Right Indexes with Unicenter Index Expert

Creating indexes on DB2 tables is one of the simplest ways to enhance performance. It is also one of the easiest things to do - you just type CREATE INDEX right? The skill is in knowing WHICH indexes to create - after all, too many indexes can degrade application performance. Unicenter Index Expert from CA makes it easy to determine WHICH indexes are RIGHT for your table. By taking into account statement execution frequency, a set of indexes that are optimised for your workload

Demystifying the Dynamic Statement Cache

This session aims to educate the DBA on these excellent problem tools. The session will also explore common UNIX tools that can be used for researching DB2 problems.

Migration of DB2 Access Control from DB2 to RACF

A field report about migrating DB2 internal security to an external security system (RACF). On a system level, all of our z/OS security had always been implemented with RACF security system - with the sole exception of the DB2 subsystem. To reduce the overhead and complexity of maintaining two interacting security systems, we decided to migrate our DB2 security definitions to RACF. The major benefits we gained from that one-year project are: - Transparency: for the administration - Performance: Resource validation only takes place once in RACF - Simplicity: Reduction from some hundred thousands of different DB2 access rights (Grants) to a few thousand generic RACF profiles - Auditability: Logging of all access by SMF - Governance: Centralized administration of all user access rights - Data quality: Avoidance of outdated and inoperative User-IDs by daily comparison between RACF UserIDs and HR data The presentation will also mention the obstacles and exceptions.

This presentation will introduce the attendee to triggers, and how they have been succesfully used in real world implementations.

DB2 for z/OS: Making Friends with the Optimizer

The DB2 optimizer has two faces when dealing with access paths: sometimes a powerful one and sometimes a weak one, depending on which information it is fed and how it is forced to make the correct choices. The most effective way to deal with this is to design appropriate indexes for SQL statements. This presentation discusses common mistakes in table and index design and discusses algorithms on how to design perfect indexes. As it is not always possible to implement the perfect index, this paper also deals with criteria on how to judge tradeoffs and discusses possible enhancements to existing indexes based on examples from the real world.

Performance Analysis of Dynamic SQL in a Java Environment

DB2 9 Database Rebuilt Support & Recovery Enhancements

DB2 9 introduced new options for the RESTORE utility to recover a database using one or more table space backups. This functionality provides the ability to build a new database using a subset of the table spaces. This can greatly reduce the disk space required to make data copies for selected testing or unique recovery situation, including dropped tables, dropped table spaces or point in time recovery to correct application errors. Other DB2 9 Recovery Enhancements will also be addressed.

The Answer to: What Happened? When?
