Access Tools for DB2 UDB for NT

Access Tools for DB2 UDB for NT
Greetings,

I would like to ask the group about the various products used to access
DB2 data. We are looking into using WebFocus or a similar product for
users to access data off a replicated database running under DB2 UDB V6
for NT.

Charlie,

We use WebFOCUS/Focus to hit backend DB2 Data on OS/390. And I have
some cautions for you. IBI uses their own query language "Focus" in
this product, and we have found that there are some drawbacks to this,
at least in our experience.

1) Focus is used only by IBI, and not a "standard" like SQL. This
makes finding people who know the language difficult and/or costly.

2) Due to the fact that Focus and DB2 do not speak the same language
the reports must be written very carefully. For example placing
a "defined field" in a where statement, can result in very large
amounts of data to be sent to the WebFOCUS server, in fact if it
is the only where statement, it could result in the entire table
being sent.

3) Again, this is us on an OS/390 box running at 100%, but we have
found that coding web reports in Perl through a direct ODBC
connection to DB2 run several times faster. We are also looking
at pulling the WebFOCUS server off of OS/390 and on to a Win 2K box.

That being said, a lot of people find WebFOCUS easy to develop in
for that quick development time. And IBI was one of the first to
market with some very nice web based reporting tools... Their MRE
product allows a point and click query over a web interface... very
nice idea, that I don't see a lot of vendors doing... just wish it
used SQL ;-)

you might like to check out Advanced Query Tool at
http://www.querytool.com. It is simple, quick to install and works very
well against DB2/NT.
