Hi Michele
I have written a presentation for IDUG and other DB2 seminars comparing the
architectural differences of DB2 on OS/390 vs. UNix/NT. I would be more
than happy to send you a copy. Just drop me an Email and let me know.
Also if you are interested in a tool set for administering DB2 on multiple
platforms check out Quest Central for DB2 on our web site WWW.QUEST.COM/DB2
and download a free trial.
Thanks

Jim,

How's going. You probably want to put your presentation on the Quest web
somewhere so people can download it.

There is also another cd-rom that IBM gives away in conference title 'DB2 UDB
Fastpath for Experienced Relational DBAs'. It is quite basic, but easy to
understand for DB2 DBA. I am not sure if the download is available on IBM
web site.

Re: Desperately seeking cross-reference bewteen UDB and OS/390 DB 2
(in response to Ranjan Birla)
Michele,

I know the feeling.
Here's some information I catched earlier on this list;

<zip>
Assume UDB = OS/390 and udb = Windows, unix, etc.

udb runs as an Instance in the machine
udb within the instance you have multiple databases
udb each database has its own catalog structure
udb until V.7.1 could not natively Join tables in different databases
udb Indexes can reside in the tablespace where the table is stored or in no
more than two other "tablespaces"
udb logs can be circular, reusing its files, or they can be retained,
requiring a little more work to manage AND affecting recovery strategy
significantly
udb Not broken up according to address space architecture since that is an
OS/390 concept
udb fixes not managed like the SMP of the OS/390 world; is more a
"replacement of everything" approach
udb no DSN... databases (eg DSNDB07 or DSNDB04, etc.) substitutes catalog
and temporary tablespaces
udb No ZPARMS but uses Database and Database Manager configuration files
instead
etc.

Concepts such as prefetch, list prefetch, bufferpools, logging, optimizer
path selection, Joins, subqueries, RI, Prim. and For. keys, cursors,
etc.are the same or very similar.

The following URL goes to the udb Ver. 7.1 manuals at IBM and if you
referred to the Administration Guide TOC and the Command Guide TOC, you
would get a pretty quick feel for the differences.

http://www-4.ibm.com/cgi-bin/db2www/data/db2/udb/winos2unix/support/v7pubs.d

I am an OS/390 DBA using version 6. I am also trying to support UDB on a
Unix platform. I keep beating my head against the wall trying to figure out
how to do the things that I know how to do in the OS/390 world, but don't
know how to do in the UDB world. For example, it took me a while, but I
finally figured out that the CHECK DATA utility on OS/390 is a SET INTEGRITY
SQL statement in UDB. I'm now trying to figure out how to free a package.
In addition to help with this, I'm wondering whether there is some
documentation somewhere that I can get my hands on to help me with the next
thing I can't figure out. Surely I'm not the only mainframer with a need
for this sort of thing. I have searched the list archives and looked for
something on the IBM web site, but I don't see anything.

The following link is a very useful comparison between the various DB2s:

This however does not cover all differences (such as the issue with check
