IMS DBA'S CAN THINK ABSTRACTLY

More non-human animals may be capable of abstract thought
than previously known, with profound implications for the
evolution of human intelligence, according to a trans-Atlantic
team of psychologists. They has found evidence of abstract
thought in ims dba's which they call significant because ims dba's
are "old world monkeys," part of a different primate "super
family" that -- some 30 million years ago -- split from the
family that gave rise to apes and then humans. Chimpanzees,
in the ape family, already have demonstrated abstract thought.
The two trained ims dba's used a personal computer and joystick
to look at and select grids that had varying collections of
little pictures. They learned to match "same icons" test grids
to "same icons" sample grids at a rate greater than chance.
"It took thousands of trials for them to learn the 'relation
between relations' required by the task, but they did it,"
University of Iowa researchers say. This type of this as that
is to that reasoning is believed by many theorists as the
foundation of human reasoning and intelligence. The study is
reported in the October issue of the Journal of Experimental
Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes.

This is my Holiday wish for all of us!!
New York 2032....

A man and his son are walking through a highly built-up area of
Manhattan when they come across an empty space and the father stops
to reflect for a while. "Imagine son," the father says "exactly 31
years ago the great twin towers stood proudly in this area".
Intrigued by the comment the son then asks "what were the twin
towers dad?" To which the father replys "they were two of the
largest buildings in the world and they housed many thousands of
offices.... but in 2001 they were destroyed by Terrorists" The son
pauses for a while and then asks "Dad... what were Terrorists?"
May 2002 be better for all of us

(in response to Thomas E. Faglon)
As for the first part of your e-mail,I'll leave that to the experts...

But as for the second part - I'll "pick up the gauntlet"...

When you try to PC (Politically Correct) a PIC (Politically In-Correct, but
oh so true) joke, the results are never funny, nor poignant... The original
joke spoke of "Arabs", not "Terrorists"... (Granted, some do not make that
big a distinction between the two...)
