Column Name length restriction in DB2 for OS/390

Column Name length restriction in DB2 for OS/390
Does IBM have any plans to increase the maximum column name/Table name
length from 18 to a higher number in DB2 for z/OS or OS/390 ?<?xml:namespace
prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Last I heard was this will be available in a future release.

Could anyone shed light on this? i.e. Specific release and dates that this
feature will be available

Thanks,
Dominic

I hope the answer is v8. I don't really know. But it would be a giant leap
forward both for DB2 on z/OS/OS390
and also for replication. I wanted to replicate a DB (on UDB on AIX) for hot
standby reasons but couldn't because
of this limit. I also had to put an entire applications DB on an AIX box
instead of OS390 just because of this.

Dominic,

According to various "V next" presentations available on the web both of
these things are on the agenda for the not-too-distant future: -

Column name lengths from 18 to 30 chars.

Table name lengths from 18 to 128 chars.

Success in obtaining specific release information (including dates) from IBM
for these "V next" improvements while it is still known as "V next" would be
impressive.

Short answer - 'YES'

Longer answer - 'probably in the next version/release but don't expect to
see it (unless you are in the IBM QPP/beta program) for a while yet (after
all, it's not even been announced yet!)

DB2 VNEXT column names can be 30; table names 128. Of course this
information is readily available at:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/db2/os390/presentations.html
< http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/db2/os390/presentations.html >

as Roger Miller has mentioned numerous times...

Re: Column Name length restriction in DB2 for OS/390
(in response to Larry Jardine)
Hi Dominic,
At the tech conference IBM said that V-NEXT will have a maximum column name length of 30 characters. The name is limited to 30 characters because that is the maximum that can be passed in the SQLDA without modifying the SQLDA structure.
I don't really recall what was said about the maximum length of the table name, but it seems to me that it was in the group of names that will go to 128 characters maximum length. If I'm wrong on this point someone please correct me.
Hope this helps,
