    ERROR REASON=X'00E40347' - ONLINE REORG

    Syed (TATA) Fazal
    Hi All,

    Does anyone know what is the cause of the error code I am getting while
    executing the Online Reorg. We just migrated to V7.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------
    -DSNU017I DSNUGSAT - UTILITY DATA BASE SERVICES MEMORY EXECUTION ABENDED,
    REASON=X'00C4'
    DSNU394I +DBT1 DSNURBXA - SORTBLD PHASE STATISTICS - NUMBER OF KEYS=105
    FOR INDEX DBADRG1W.REORG_REORG001_IX
    -DSNU016I DSNUGBAC - UTILITY BATCH MEMORY EXECUTION ABENDED,
    REASON=X'00E4034
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ------------------------------------------

    Thanks,
    Syed

    The explanation for this error:

    "Explanation: This utility's main task is abending because one of its
    subtasks terminated abnormally. The subtask itself issues an abend before
    this one is issued.

    System Action: Any error message generated by the subtask in conjunction

    DB2 error codes are 8 characters so you are missing the last character of
    the 00e4034* something code. There should be a systems dump for the DBM1
    address space to identify the actual module that abended. The E40347 just
    means that a subtask failed so DB2 is abending the utility.

    Hi Mike,

    Yes we did find the system dump and applied a maintenance patch. But it
    seems the patch we applied is not the right one. The fact is that the Online
    Reorg was working fine before it hit this bump. Now the Online Reorg is
    failing with the same error messages in test and production environment. I
    was thinking if anyone in the listserv has faced a situation like this and
    know of any appropriate patch.

    Thanks,
    Syed

    I am sure we had this at Sony a couple yearsback and I think I posted to the
    list about it.

    .... but a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then.

    I got this (rather unspecific) error a while ago in V6. OLR had a lot of
    problems with undefined or empty indexes, when it was run on multi-table
    tablespaces. The problem started after application of maintenance, so it
    is a recently-introduced bug. Make sure you've applied all available PTFs
    for OLR.

    We've had REORG problems in the past where the JCL specifies REGION=0M with
    default SYNCSORT parms and a partitioning index is involved. Multiple sort
    subtasks get started and these were running out of memory. We put some SORT
    parms in to reduce the amount of memory being allocated (and reduce the
    number of concurrent tasks) and this cured the problem.

    Regards,

    What were the sort parms? We had a similar problem...

    Steve,

    Can you please share the sort parm. I would try and change the jcl and
    rerun the job. The Online reorg was working fine during the testing but in
    production it blew up initially with a condition code of 8 and after that
    when I reran the job I keep getting X'00E40347' in production. I got the
    same error when I ran the job in test. So we were thinking that its a
    problem that needs to be fixed by IBM since this happened after we migrated
    from V6 to V7.

    Thanks,
    Syed

    What's is your version of DB2 and what RSU level are you at? There are PTFs
    that addressed this issue by reducing the amount of subtasks that were used
    for processing. Also there was additional information that came out at the
    same time relating to Syncsort.

    Jeremiah Eden
    I just found what I did several years ago to resolve this.

    1) I applied V6 APAR PQ48300 (V7 version is PQ48507) which limits the
    amount of subtasks used.

    2) Started using syncsort parms specified in II12069. See Problem summary
    section titled

    "PROBLEM SUMMARY:Poor Sorting Performance in DB2V6/R610"

    Their parm suggestion is below. They also had other suggestions which you
    should read.

    MINCORE=300K,VSCORE=400K,VSCORET=6M,CORE=MAX,DSM=OFF

    3) In addition we put on Syncsort Apars SY53900 and SY53810.

    Our parms are pretty similar to Jeremiah's -

    VSCORE=500K,MINCORE=400K,VSCORET=2M

    I'm not in the office at the moment, so I can't check what the (biggish)
    difference in the VSCORET parm means. HTH.

    Syed,

    Use a £ORTPARM DD statement (£ = pound sign)
    e.g. for inline in the JCL
    //£ORTPARM DD *
    BMSG
    VSCORE=500K,MINCORE=400K,VSCORET=6M
    /*

    Or you can stick it it a dataset if you're calling the JCL in a procedure.

    from memory - it should be a ddname like //$ortparm dd something dsn or *
