DB2- L response - Data warehousing/Data Mining/ETL Questions for list user
Edward

Computer Associates Inforefiner and Infotransport products can handle
the job of extracting and transporting from the mainframe to the UDB
staging area. Populating the star schema directly may also be possible.
If we can populate the star schema directly then we can save a step and
make the process more efficient.
Ideally we would need to work with you further to discover exactly what
the requirements (and solutions!) are.

You can fine more information on these tools at
http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/Product.asp?ID=1011 and
http://www3.ca.com/Solutions/Product.asp?ID=1012

If you would like to take this further, please drop me a line (off list)
letting me know geographically where you are located and I will get a
local technical to give you a call

Hope this helps

Subject: Data warehousing/Data Mining/ETL Questions for list user

We have just completed a pilot that exports selected OS/390 DB2 tables
via sql to a udb server and then with more sql to load/transform to a
udb star schema for reporting purposes using third party software. Pilot
was successful but now need to find a tool or tools to assist us with
the process. Currently, there is approximately 40 million records in 18
tables being processed daily.

Some question for the list users are:

Does anyone out there successfully do something like this and how?
Is there one tool that can do this or is it a combination of tools?
Is it possible to capture and apply updates from the OS/390 to UDB
instead of a full export/load of tables? If so, How are the updates
handled? Do we need to create shadow tables or read logs or something
else?
Where is the transformation and load handled? All on the Mainframe?
All
on the server? Combination?
