    Help on Issuing MVS Commands from REXX. URGENT!!!

    Pantazis Pantazi
    [Laiki Group]
    I want to check whether a job/started task is running in MVS in Batch and
    the only way I could find was to build a
    REXX procedure to issue the MVS command "D A,L" and capture the output and
    process it.

    However, I made several effort to issue the command but I was not able to
    issue it.

    How do I issue such MVS command from REXX? or is there any other easier
    way?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Regards,
    Pantazis

    Hi Pantazis,

    Just a sample :

    /* REXX */
    /* run MVS console */
    /* trace r */
    address TSO 'CONSPROF SOLDISPLAY(NO)'
    address TSO 'CONSOLE ACTIVATE'
    address CONSOLE 'd a,l'
    /* retrieve output command */
    do forever
    fc = GETMSG('line.','SOL',,,10)
    if fc = 0 then leave
    end
    do i = 1 to line.0
    say '*** ' line.i
    end
    address TSO 'CONSOLE DEACTIVATE'
    exit

    I see that you trap the output in a different way.

    Doesn't OUTTRAP work in this scenario?

    Thanks

    IMHO, you cannot.

    You can use the OUTTRAP function only in REXX execs that run in the TSO/E
    address space and use GETMSG to retrieve messages that are routed to the
    user's console but that are *not* being displayed at the user's terminal.
    HTH.

    Thanks for the prompt reply!

    I am new to REXX so I lack many issues. I will give it a try tomorrow or on
    Monday, since from
    the time I had sent the original message my plans have changed twice (from
    the management)

    Thanks again

    Don't you also need some kind of RACF permission to issue MVS commands?

    As an alternative to issuing MVS commands from a user batch job with has
    many security / audit exposures and requires TSO OPER authority I would
    recommend using the TSO "Status" command from REXX in a batch TSO step.
    "ST jobname" works fine for any job name and is not a secured command.

    As an alternative to issuing MVS commands from a user batch job with has
    many security / audit exposures and requires TSO OPER authority I would
    recommend using the TSO "Status" command from REXX in a batch TSO step.
    "ST jobname" works fine for any job name and is not a secured command.

    Subject: Help on Issuing MVS Commands from REXX. URGENT!!!

    I want to check whether a job/started task is running in MVS in Batch
    and the only way I could find was to build a REXX procedure to issue the
    MVS command "D A,L" and capture the output and process it.

    However, I made several effort to issue the command but I was not able
    to issue it.

    How do I issue such MVS command from REXX? or is there any other easier
    way?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Regards,
    Pantazis
