Online Reorg using MAXRO DEFER

Tim Kelly

Online Reorg using MAXRO DEFER
Is anyone doing IBM Online Reorgs with MAXRO set to DEFER? Then at a later
schedule time issue an ALTER UTILITY for MAXRO setting to a number of
seconds so the REORG then does the last interation of the log and the
SWITCH. Have also considered keying off message DSNU362I so anyone doing
that would be of interest as well.

Thanks

Tim

Do you really need to do that? Isn't it enough to just set a fairly short
value for MAXRO and then use RETRY and RETRY_DELAY? (Which is, of course,
how we do things in my shop.)

Re: Online Reorg using MAXRO DEFER
(in response to Isaac Yassin)
We use five, and we have some good periods when business is slow so
getting to a five-second RO (Read-Only) estimated log-apply duration isn't
a problem.

We _do_ have problems when someone else is using the resource, of course
:-( but so far, specifying a RETRY_DELAY of a minute and RETRY of 100 (max
is 255, for those of y'all too lazy to hit the manuals) has avoided all
but two incidents. I also strongly recommend setting LONGLOG TERM and
TIMEOUT TERM to minimize operational disruptions as a result of problem
REORGs.

Re: Online Reorg using MAXRO DEFER
(in response to Philip Sevetson)
Tim,
Yes we use it here. We have a process that runs subsecond but
multiple concurrent threads throughout the day and week. When we reorg
our large partitioned tablespaces(on Sundays) that are used by this
process we use the maxro defer to keep from timing any of those
transactions out. Every Sunday this process gets stopped for a couple of
hours so that we can do maintenance functions. Once the transaction is
stopped, we then issue the alter utility to 5 or so and let the reorg
complete.
Also, it seems that Checkfree does the same thing. Robert Catterall
wrote a recent article in the DB2Magazine. He describes doing the same
thing when reorging heavily used tables.
Apparently, the otehr folks who have responded thus far do not have
any constant heavy hitters that they have to worry about timing out.
