Sysbase to DB2

Db2System Process

Sysbase to DB2
All:

We see Database Migration happening in our Shop, but would like to invite a
discussion on why people want to move OUT OF SYSBASE to DB2 or Oracle?

Any pointers?

TIA

Re: Sysbase to DB2

Because Sybase is a crock of crap?

Seriously, sybase doesn't scale, has poor query optimisation, doesn't
support useful things like inline views, has this nasty tempdb
implementation that if you fill the tempdb the whole server crashes, the
RI implementation is wickedly slow, the data integrity is questionable
etc. etc. Sybase has its day in the 80's - too many shops (including
mine) pandered to it for far too long just because it was easy to learn
and quick to implement and it supports long table names (why the hell
didn't IBM see that 18 chars is too short until now?). It kept up with
the pack in terms of buzzwords (see XML support among other things), but
never invested in the fundamentals such as share level change reorgs.
They're pretty much having to give Sybase away with boxes of breakfast
cereal to get people to get it in the door.

Hope this helps,

Ben

Re: Sysbase to DB2

Hi

We have several reasons

They are

Price
New functionality
Possibility of a Sybase being taken over (Remember Ingress)
Availability of Sybase skilled staff

Thanks

John Curran
