On the other hand, if IBM didn't have such a strong presence at IDUG, it
would become impossible for me to justify attendance to my management.
They want me to have a healthy dose from the experts that THEY trust.
Personally, I like vendor presentations when they present highly
technical information that would be difficult to attain elsewhere. For
vendor sessions that meet that criterion, I wouldn't mind a high
percentage of them at IDUG. In my limited experience, IBM has been
better than most other vendors at presenting solid technical
information. I wish CA would deliver some of that!

Re: IDUG 2006 - North America: Online Confe rence Schedule Now Live!
(in response to Cathy Taddei)
Hi Wayne,

Thanks for your comments. I'm always interested in talking about IDUG. I
can certainly understand your interest in user presentations, there's no
doubt that it's one of the best parts of the IDUG conference. And
although the conference isn’t entirely user presentations, I’m sure you
noticed there are a lot of them on the grid, and they’re on great topics
too. As you pointed out, you really can't get those user experiences
anywhere else.

But the IBM presentations add an aspect to IDUG that’s just as important.
As the developers of DB2 they really do provide an essential insider's
view. For attendees of IDUG they provide information on the latest
releases of DB2, the newest techniques, and even on the future direction
of DB2 itself. All good stuff.

I can also try to address your question about the percentage of IBM
speakers at IDUG. I don't have the actual percentages, but I believe that
33% is probably pretty close. But whatever the percentage is, some will
think it is too high and some may think it's too low.

But there's one key element that really differentiates IDUG as a
conference. The committee that selects all of the presentations (whether
by users, IBM, vendor or consultant) is made up of independent users.
DBAs, programmers and database professionals just like you and I. We work
with DB2 day in and day out just like anyone else. The committee selects a
slate of speakers that we believe will provide the most value to an
attendee (because we ourselves are also attendees). And the mix of user,
IBM, vendor and consultant is, as you can imagine, a difficult balancing
act.

Yes, we work within a conference model that provides some rough guidelines
for the mix of presentations. And we do have a liaison from IBM and even
from some of the founding vendor members of IDUG. But they act in liaison
roles only and the decisions regarding the presentations selected are made
solely by the committee of independent users.

We like to think that this independent selection process allows us to pick
the best slate of user presentations (and there are quite a few of them
this year). While at the same time we get the added benefit of selecting
from the cream of the crop when it comes to the IBM presentations. And
the entire selection process is done by real life independent users of
DB2, just like you.

There’s also a lot of other opportunities for user interaction beyond the
presentations. There are SIGs, networking lunches, receptions and dine
around options just to name a few. All are chances to sit down with our
peers and talk about the problems we face every day.

So, again, Thanks for your input, it really is good to hear from others
about IDUG. I realize I may not have completely convinced you, but
hopefully you can take a look at IDUG in a little different light.

Best Regards,
Joe Burns.

IDUG 2006 - North America: Online Confe rence Schedule Now Live!
(in response to Joseph Burns)
I am a representative of CA as well as the Board of Directors of IDUG.
I would like to address this thread on a number of levels. First, IBM
is to be applauded for their extensive support of IDUG, which most
definitely IS an independent USER run DB2 user group. As the owner and
developer of DB2 in all of it's flavors on all platforms, they have a
great wealth of knowledge to bring to this user group and they have
allowed their technicians on all levels to participate. This allows the
IDUG conferences to benefit from this collective level of intelligence
brought by the IBMers. This is all good.

As for IDUG, this is a USER run USER group to be sure (Furthermore, the
users that run IDUG are all volunteers and IDUG is always looking for
additional volunteers to help in many capacities). The user community
wants to hear from other users and their successes, issues, concerns,
needs, etc. with regard to DB2 on all platforms. As a result, the
primary goal is to have as many USERs give presentations as possible to
allow IDUG as a group to advocate for DB2 users around the globe. All
submissions are analyzed by the various Conference Planning Committees
across our 3 major global annual gatherings and selections are made
based upon the desires and feedback given by the USERs. If there were
more user presentations submitted, more would be selected. We at IDUG
encourage and support as many user presentations as possible. To date,
the best selections, as deemed by the North American Conference Planning
Committee in conjunction with the desires of the user group as a whole,
have yielded the content at the currently debated North America
conference. To be sure, IBM does have the single highest concentration
of submissions per any enterprise submitting presentations. That should
be expected as they own the database and enthusiastically support this
user group.

As for CA, we are a dedicated supporter and founder of IDUG. As far as
investment in technical content for the user group goes, we have given
many, many technical presentations at not only the North American
conference but the others around the world as well. I appreciate the
desire for CA to do more from a technical perspective at IDUG and I can
assure you we are concretely committed to doing so.

In speaking as a member of the vendor community supporting IDUG, all of
us, including IBM, do a tremendous amount to support the conferences and
IDUG as a whole through sponsorships, booths, vendor presentations, IDUG
Solutions Journal, regional user groups, this list server, etc. IDUG is
NOT just a conference, but a user group that extends it membership to
those who attend a conference. There is far more to support of IDUG,
and the user community as a whole, that extends beyond our three major
gatherings each year and many of the vendors you see at the conferences
are committed supporters of the user group in general OUTSIDE of the
conferences. Your point of entry to the ongoing user group is
www.idug.com and you will see some of the other offerings and support of
the user community. And if there is something that you are looking for
that is not there, simply let IDUG know and it will be evaluated.

The IDUG conferences have a large number of IBM technical presenters, as
well as MANY other supporting vendors. To say that IBM is the only
trusted presenter does the vendor community supporting IDUG a
disservice. And if this is the case amongst our member's management
teams, we as a vendor community would like the opportunity to rectify
that situation by addressing your issues and concerns.

(in response to Scott L Jessee)
Since you asked...I would like to see technical presentations on the
internals of CA products, such as Insight, Rapid Reorg, Merge/Modify,
Quick Copy, and so forth. Most of the CA technical presentations I've
seen seem to duplicate IBM's effort to cover DB2. Phil Grainger and I
had this conversation this morning, and he explained to me that until
now, "NO-ONE is allowed to do presentations on PRODUCTS FOR SALE apart
from customers (not IBM and not vendors). This was originally to prevent
vendors from turning IDUG into a marketing free-for-all". He indicated
that this is changing, starting next May in Tampa. I hope I will see a
bit more technical depth on CA products than is available in the
manuals.

Cathy Taddei

Re: IDUG 2006 - North America: Online Confe rence Schedule Now Live!
(in response to Cathy Taddei)

OK, in an attempt to send Cathy Taddei a concise reply I inadvertently
made my comments OVERLY concise and (hence) misleading!

What I meant to say is that "NO VENDORS are permitted by IDUG to present
MARKETING presentations on their tools" - this means no presentations
which compare their products with those of other vendors (no comparisons
on usability, features, performance etc etc). There are certainly no
restrictions on USERS presenting sessions on their use of any vendors
products, indeed there are in fact no restrictions on VENDORS themselves
presenting sessions on the technicalities of their products.

However, during the abstract selection process, as IDUG is a DB2
conference, various planning committees have been "reluctant" to get too
involved in the selection of "tools sessions" when there are many
possible presentations on DB2 itself.

As I mentioned, this is being addressed in the conference model for
North American IDUG in Tampa (which will hopefully be extended to
European IDUG next October) to have a specific "track" available for
vendors to do TECHNICAL (i.e. non-marketing) sessions on their products.

I hope that clarifies things a bit more. I guess the moral is "don't
write important eMails late at night" and "don't try and simplify
explanations to the extent that the meaning of the explanation is
changed"

Sorry

OK, in an attempt to send Cathy Taddei a concise reply I inadvertently
made my comments OVERLY concise and (hence) misleading!

What I meant to say is that "NO VENDORS are permitted by IDUG to
present MARKETING presentations on their tools" - this means no
presentations which compare their products with those of other vendors
(no comparisons on usability, features, performance etc etc). There are
certainly no restrictions on USERS presenting sessions on their use of
any vendors products, indeed there are in fact no restrictions on
VENDORS themselves presenting sessions on the technicalities of their
products.

However, during the abstract selection process, as IDUG is a DB2
conference, various planning committees have been "reluctant" to get too
involved in the selection of "tools sessions" when there are many
possible presentations on DB2 itself.

As I mentioned, this is being addressed in the conference model for
North American IDUG in Tampa (which will hopefully be extended to
European IDUG next October) to have a specific "track" available for
vendors to do TECHNICAL (i.e. non-marketing) sessions on their
products.

I hope that clarifies things a bit more. I guess the moral is "don't
write important eMails late at night" and "don't try and simplify
explanations to the extent that the meaning of the explanation is
changed"

Sorry
