z/OS v7.1: Scrollable vs. Non-scrollable
Hi everyone,

this came up as a question from an application developper:
anyone out there ever done any benchmarking on the use of scrollable vs. non-scrollable cursors ?
What are the pros and cons ?

Any comment appreciated.

Best regards and thanks a lot in advance

Hi Reudiger

There are some figures in the Version 7 Performance Topics Redbook, section
3.7 http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246129.html. These tests were
done in an IBM lab. Others may have figures from production sites.

Ruediger,

I ran some initial tests on our test machine initial test on scrollable
cursors back when version 7 was new. My best result had them running twice
as long so we quickly lost interest in trying to use them.

Besides performance, our other con was the internal storage space used.
Static scrollable cursors used some pool space that we wished to use
differently.

If you would like some further details, please contact me and I'll dig up
some specifics.
