DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates?

DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates?
Hi List,

just out of idle curiosity: are there any published or rumoured
end-of-marketing and end-of-service dates for DB2 V7 on the mainframe? The
relevant IBM page lists them as TBD, but the page was last updated nearly
two years ago...

Re: DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates?

The general practice today (notice I did not say rule) is Vn will be out of service 1 year after general availability for Vn+2. For DB2 V=7 as n+2 does not exist, out of service has not been announced.

My own guess is V8+1 GA is +/- 18 mo out which would make possible end of service about July 2008.

I have no inside information on this. IBM people on this forum have made refrences for what is happening in the DB2 version after 8 on this list server and the 'fact' that it is already in progress.

We haven't announced these dates yet.... As and when I find out I'll make
a point of putting out a post to this list... unless someone beats me to

No End of Service date has been announced for DB2 Version 7. However,
watch this space and we will post as soon as a date is announced.

Re: DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates

I am pleased to see that DB2-L in the words of several IBMers has become an official repository of IBM DB2 announcements. In response to Dr Ebert's
"any published
or rumored
end-of-marketing and end-of-service dates for DB2 V7 on
the mainframe?"
We get, "watch this space and we will tell you!!!"

This is interesting both in its classic non-commitment and suggestion "read the announcements here".

The requester was looking for either an announcement or a rumor. Very few can make announcements on behalf of IBM, In my original response to this question "V7 EOS will be 1 year after GA of what is now Vnext" I was proud to provide an educated (not inside) rumor.

Re: DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates
(in response to Avram Friedman)
Well let's hope that V7 end-of-service will be given as late as possible,
'rumors' say that many shops are decided to stay in V7 as long as possible
as V8 gives them little advantages for their business.
Considering the 'maturity' of new features probably they are right and
wise.

Re: DB2 V7, zOS: EoM/EoS Dates?
(in response to William Favero)
The web should be updated in a few days to indicate projected dates. I'd
try looking again next week. FYI, that is not how I would describe our
general practice. Here are the words I use today (and they are likely to
change again soon).

All statements regarding the future direction and intent of IBM are
subject to change or withdrawal without notice and represent goals and
objectives only.

As of March 2006, DB2 V7 has been generally available for five years. DB2
V8 has been generally available for two years. If you are currently
running V7, then it’s time to plan your migration to V8. I generally
think of five years after general availability as the end of practical
life for a DB2 release. Migration to Vnext will be only from DB2 for z/OS
V8. There will not be any ability to skip a version. There are a few
customers still running older versions, but the end of service is past. In
general, you can expect versions to be in service for five years and end
of service to be announced a year in advance. There is also an extended
service period of three years for an additional charge.

Most customers are currently running V7 in 1Q 2006, but the migration is
running faster now. Our estimate or projection for end of marketing is
2Q 2006. End of service of Version 7 is projected as September 2007,
consistent with end of service for all of the operating systems that
support processors other than zSeries or System z9.

To see current DB2 availability notices, start at
ibm.com/software/db2zos Click on Support, then on Product Life
Cycle. ibm.com/software/data/db2/os390/support/plc/
