Help determining install/cust time of DB2 Tools DB2-ZOS V7
Hi everybody in the List:

I have to define a plan for installation and customization of DB2 TOOLS V7
under ZOS 1.5 OS. I have never did it and the client is been urgent of
that.

I am guessed two or three days for each tool (13 tools) that results in
one month approximately. Is it closely to reality???

I am wondering if someone out there have the experience installing and
customizing the followed DB2 ZOS TOOLS:

Tipo-Mod. Descripción:
=========
5655-E56 DB2 LOG ANALYSIS TOOL V1
5655-I19 DB2 HIGH PERF UNLOAD V2
5655-I22 DB2 SQL PERF ANALYZER V2
5655-J49 DB2 PERFORMANCE EXPERT V2
5655-N82 DB2 DB/DASD V6.1
5655-N86 DB2 DB/SMU V6.1
5697-E98 DB2 UTILITIES SUITE V7
5697-I02 DB2 TEST DATABASE GENERATOR V2
5697-I03 DB2 Query Monitor for z/OS, V2.2
5697-I20 DB2 OBJECT RESTORE V2
5697-J22 DB2 DATA ARCHIVE EXPERT V2
5697-L40 DB2 OBJECT COMPARISON TOOL V3.1
5697-L90 DB2 ADMINISTRATION TOOL V7

Any help, tips, tricks, advises and possible pitfalls would be appreciated
so much

Thanks in advance

Hi
I have installed many on the list, some of them there is not much to
them. The DB2 utilities suite should already be there with the DB2 code
but may need licensing FMID's applied.
To get you going after all the SMPE work is done is extract from each of
the manuals the APF and program authorization and organise that. There
a couple of started tasks also involved namely with the performance
tools, but you could leave that till last and get the other products
running just by taking the defaults through the customisation.
Doing the admin tool (include comparison tool as it interfaces with the
admin tool menu) first so you get the launchpad which is a panel that
will link most of the other products to one interface. It is also good
for showing the product installed and version.
As far as time frame to install, admin should take no longer than a day
(first time around and little local customisation). Log analysis, HPU,
1/2 day, the others with authorisations done a day each maybe. It will
all depend on how much custmisation you want to do.
I hope this of use and gets you going.
Good luck.
regards
Craig

I am guessing the key indicator in your question is is
"I have never did it"

Making an additional assumption ... I would guess that you have never installed a vendor written ISV product.

These are the big issues to watch for!

Able to communicate with the vendor (no add +/- 30 days)
Product physically in house (no add +/- 45 days)
Tape? do you know who to get an external tape mounted?
Electronic delivery? Crypto enabled? USS issues?
Shop change control / systems configuration procedures
This can be trivial or a big killer of time. It is usually a big killer.
Do changes need to be scheduled in advance? How long
Do changes need to be made on weekends?
APF datasets, linklist datasets needed? who does / approves
RACF or other security
TSO panels logon procedures etc
SMP/E "Systems Maintenance Program"
This is the tool that installs systems software. If you are not trained in this area add 2 weeks for formal training, 2 weeks for hands on experience, 2 weeks for configuring your environment ... 2 weeks to get this all on your approved personal schedule.

I did not speak of the DB2 related issues like are you a SYSADM? or atleast have authority to create Databases tablespaces tables, plans packages etc?

With the right experience, skills, resources, permissions the installs are actually trivial. The configuration of any product that one is not familiar with can be a nightmare however.

Help determining install/cust time of DB2 Tools DB2-ZOS V7
(in response to Avram Friedman)
Luis,

It has been a few years since I installed any of these. In addition to the
advice you have already received, let me say a few words about High
Performance Unload.

I found this one to be extremely confusing. I have spoken to the person
who does the installation work for us now, and she agrees that it is still
very confusing. Once you get used to the installation process, it is
easier. If you are attacking this for the first time, it may take you
longer than you anticipate.

Mark

Re: Help determining install/cust time of DB2 Tools DB2-ZOS V7
(in response to Mark McCormack)
Mark, Craig and Avram, thank you very much.

I have installed only DB2 on OS390 & ZOS and I can manage SMP/E, DB2 and
RACF issues without problem. ISV products have not been an experience for
me.

My key concern is the time ... but with all your advises I am thinking
over 1.5/2 months to do all the work, I guess this is a good approach.

The plan will be start first with "easy to do" tools and finishing with
the more complicated tools, from an install/custom point of view:

* basic administration tools (Easy installation)
* advanced administration tool
* monitoring tools

Again, thanks so much.
