UDB Version 8 Import pointed at z/OS: Bad Behaviour.

UDB Version 8 Import pointed at z/OS: Bad Behaviour.
I am soliciting the groups' opinion on next steps. I am testing an Oracle to DB2 z/OS conversion process, not the IBM supplied MTK, that relies upon the UDB Import utility to insert data to DB2 after unloading from Oracle to sequential datasets. I am finding the IMPORT utility to be poorly behaved and wonder if its just me or if the group thinks whether a PMR would have a prayer of making a difference.

To review, the import utility has many options, most of which are unavailable when pointed at z/OS. For example, you can only 'insert' data from an IXF format. Further, it only issues commits at table end; no intervening commits regardless of number of rows. It does lock the table in exclusive mode.

The record sofar is 23 million inserts per commit. The step took nearly 12 hours to complete.
And yes, I've had some of these tests crap out so I've had long backouts.

Since this utility holds locks for so long my STOSPACE jobs catalog copy jobs and several other maintenance jobs abend. Cross System Loader is not an option yet.

What I'd like to see is either the IMPORT utility adhere to normal application best practices, i.e. issue commits and offer checkpoint restart capability, or have Toronto take advantage of some of the many go fasts now built into the z/OS utilities.

So the question for the group, since this utility has been quality challenged for some time, is it worth opening a PMR and hoping for the best or is it a waste of time and I should start developing my own alternative? I have not tested the Version 9 import utility yet; we had similar issues on Version 7 of UDB with this utility however.

Thanks for your assistance, or at least your forebearance.

(in response to Edward Long)
I hope I understand this correctly, the process is going from Oracle to
DB2 on z/os (Mainframe).

I would recommend this, FTP the files to the mainframe, use the z/os
load utility on the mainframe. With the load utility use the option of
"LOG(NO)", which is much faster. There is no rollback if the job
abends.

Hope this helps
