This answer is very easy. You will have to wait for DB2 9. IBM has
mentioned you will be able to turn off logging once you are on the next
release of DB2.

Has IBM given up? I thought their position was that disabling logging
would give negligible performance improvements that wouldn't outweigh the
disadvantages due to the loss of recoverability.

It's not so much about performance - more to do with the amount of unnecessary log data

Also, it comes with lots of very ominous caveats about making your data unrecoverable

Re: DB2 v8 z/OS How do you turn off logging...

We actually have a batch process that runs several times based on some date ranges the users request. During this time of the year the users are running year end data and as a result, there could be a million rows inserted into the table. This data is basically used by stored procedures to produce online reports. This data is basically throw away and is deleted every 5 days. This seems to be causing performance issues.

Re: DB2 v8 z/OS How do you turn off logging...

How do you know that your performance issues are due to logging per se? 1
million row insert is relatively minor amount.

My client has tables that add (INSERT) over a few days several million rows
which are then deleted after a week. And our performance on these tables is
excellent. But we use extensive stats for the various sizes of the tables to
ensure that DB2 is current with accurate stats.

Re: DB2 v8 z/OS How do you turn off logging...
(in response to Myron Miller)
Beside from the "minor" overhead of logging a lot of Inserts - another
issue is if the application fails at some point-in-time and millions of
INSERTs need to be rolled back - this could be another issue.

Some ERP applications do INSERT into SELECT from when doing upgrades,
and this logging could be considered unnecessary, and it could be a
great idea to turn off logging while doing "INSERT into ... SELECT from"
since the restart could be started quicker.

Also, there are some changes targetted for DB2 9 to address this specific issue

- INSERT APPEND which will not attempt to maintain clustering data sequence
and
- INTELLIGENT INDEX PAGE SPLIT which will split index pages 90/10 instead of 50/50 when ascending inserts are detected

Logging is almost always NEVER a perofrmance bottleneck

Re: DB2 v8 z/OS How do you turn off logging...
(in response to Phil Grainger)

Actually I received a lot of reproaches when asking it in DB2-L, still
having headaches due to the hard beating...

It seems now that in V9 (see 'Overview of DB2 V9 for z/OS' by Namik Hrle,
pag 17) someone realized it's useless to do some batch work with a huge
amount of logging (and potentially a long rolback) that actually isn't
necessary. With some cautions, it could be a nice features. The problems
were Log write latching & Log data sets write bottlenecks but I add
potential rollbacks.

We'll see what this new features is....maybe....

Max Scarpa

This answer is very easy. You will have to wait for DB2 9. IBM has
mentioned you will be able to turn off logging once you are on the next

but with the proposed DB2 9 feature, now instead of a rollback you get a RECP if you are lucky, or an unrecoverable situation if you are unlucky

Actually I received a lot of reproaches when asking it in DB2-L, still having headaches due to the hard beating...

It seems now that in V9 (see 'Overview of DB2 V9 for z/OS' by Namik Hrle, pag 17) someone realized it's useless to do some batch work with a huge amount of logging (and potentially a long rolback) that actually isn't necessary. With some cautions, it could be a nice features. The problems were Log write latching & Log data sets write bottlenecks but I add potential rollbacks.

We'll see what this new features is....maybe....

Max Scarpa

This answer is very easy. You will have to wait for DB2 9. IBM has mentioned you will be able to turn off logging once you are on the next release of DB2.

How do we turn off logging on a table/tablespace?

Re: DB2 v8 z/OS How do you turn off logging...
(in response to Phil Grainger)

Phil, I can say from burns I still have on my skin that in some cases it's
better a RECP that a hiperlong, unpredictable rollback at the beginning of
prod with CPU at 100%. As you know rollback is at least double that logging
and could involve archives (and HSM or tapes and DASD space and so on). A
recover can be scheduled via automatic scheduling and RECP status can
easily be detected via, for instance, a trivial REXX. A rollback can't. I
don't think it's a good idea to stop DB2 and restart postponing work. I
do a recover to copy and I'm ok.

I saw many applications that could gain advantages from this new feature.
Of course with a giant, red 'USE AT YOUR OWN RISK'. But isn't LOAD LOG NO +
NOCOPYPEND (or REPAIR NOCOPYPEND) risky for recovery ? And it happens.

Just the opinion of a 'burned' sysprog.

Cheers

Max Scarpa

To continue the thread, "And now for something completely different...".

Remember my IMPORT query of a month or so back, that sad sack of a utility would be instantly enhanced if the target were unlogged. This particular design is often used with Oracle's equivalent, but vastly superior, utility of the same name.

Test databases make grand targets for delogification.

I imagine a lot of people might want to run off logging - Monty Python did a great advert for lumberjacks (for those of us of a "certain age")

You just received the correct answer to your questions. However, I am
curious about "Why?" you might want to run off logging?
