V7 z/OS 1.7. Accounting Class 7 & 8 Overhead

V7 z/OS 1.7. Accounting Class 7 & 8 Overhead
Does anyone have a ball park figure for the additional overhead of accounting
class 7 & 8 over and above 2 & 3?

The opinions on this seem to range from the additional overhead of 7 & 8
being "negligible" to "use with caution".

The overhead of Class 2 is often quoted as being in the 3% (OLTP) - 10%
(Batch) range, but I haven't been able to find figures broken out for 7 & 8.

Any pointers will be much appreciated.

(in response to Adam Baldwin)
Hi Adam

Negligible is correct. Most of the work is already done for classes 2 and 3. The overhead for 7 & 8 is just the update of extra internal counters. I remember seeing this info from IBM when class 7/8 were first introduced, but it was so long ago I haven't been able to track down the reference. I am pretty sure it was in the performance Redbook for Version ??.

(in response to Mike Turner)
Thanks Mike. I'd tried searching the internet - and the intranet at IBM - for
the redbooks but I haven't found any pre V6 performance redbooks. If anyone
has a softcopy of the relevant version - (packages came in with V2.3 so I
imagine that the info may be in a V3 or 4 redbook??) - I'd be very grateful.

Thanks, Adam

Re: V7 z/OS 1.7. Accounting Class 7 & 8 Overhead
(in response to Phil Grainger)
Adam,

In the redbook "DB2 9 for zOS Performance Topics" there is a chapter
about trace overhead in DB2 V8 and V9.
In V8 the overhead of accounting class 1,2,3 is about 3%, starting 7 and
8 adds an average of 4% cpu.
This ofcourse depends of the type of application.

Groeten,
Bart
