REORG of SPT01

Jeff Skogsberg

REORG of SPT01
We are a z/OS shop running DB2 v8.1

I ran a reorg of DSNDB01.SPT01 using the following steps.

1. Allocated shadow 'J' datasets for SPT01, DSNSPT01 & DSNSPT02
(current files are 'I' datasets).
2. Ran image copy of the catalog and directory.
3. Ran a reorg of SPT01 using SHRLEVEL REFERENCE.

I now have a set of 'I' datasets and 'J' datasets. I assume that my
current table resides in the 'J' datasets and I can delete the 'I'
datasets.

Here's my question. Somewhere DB2 equates DSNDB01.SPT01 with the 'I'
or 'J' datasets, where can I find that information?

Hi Jeff. You cannot specify fastswitch for catalog and directory
tablespaces. DB2 will rename the shadow dataset back to I0001.

Cathy

Rename. Don't delete. Preferably at some quiet hour when a DB2 problem wouldn't cause a high-visibility outage.
Note: If you can't rename the file, DB2 is probably using it, so you're almost certainly covered... but it's not an area in which experimentation is to be encouraged.

Re: REORG of SPT01

I think you'll find (based on my limited experience) it's the 'I' cluster that DB2 is using. If you
do a listcat you'll notice its recent creation date. There are renames something like I->S, J-
>I, S->J.

Did you run an image copy _after_ the reorg. Always a good thing to do; makes the recovery
go so much quicker if you find you've deleted the wrong cluster.

Re: REORG of SPT01

Hi Jeff,

Since, you are at version 8, I would recommend reviewing the DSNTIJNE migration job. This job performs on-line reorgs of the catalog, as while as converting the catalog. What I did was copy it, and modified it by removing all statements except for the re-org steps and now I'm using it to perform online reorgs of my catalog. Note: I modified the DSNTIJNE job such that each catalog reorg is a separate job. I'm enclosing a copy of the job that reorg's the SPT01 tablespace.

In addition, I would encourage anyone who is thinking about reorging catalog tablespaces to read the Admin and Utility Guides.

Good Luck,
George

Subject: [DB2-L] REORG of SPT01

We are a z/OS shop running DB2 v8.1

I ran a reorg of DSNDB01.SPT01 using the following steps.

1.   Allocated shadow 'J' datasets for SPT01, DSNSPT01 & DSNSPT02  (current files are 'I' datasets).
2.   Ran image copy of the catalog and directory.
3.   Ran a reorg of SPT01 using SHRLEVEL REFERENCE.

I now have a set of 'I' datasets and 'J' datasets.  I assume that my current table resides in the 'J' datasets and I can delete the 'I' datasets.

Here's my question.  Somewhere DB2 equates DSNDB01.SPT01 with the 'I' or 'J' datasets, where can I find that information?
