[DB2-L] [DB2] DB2 9 for z/OS - which Reason Codes go with SQLCODE -904 ?
Faz,

enough is enough; I wouldn't say that "Messages & Codes" make up my favourite read, in fact I'm more the whodunnit-type, and let's face it, thrilling as M&C is, it won't keep me awake at night, in fact it might not even do the trick during the day either.
All I wanted to know was "is there - or isn't there - a quick reference where one might find something like ... a -904 might come with the following reason codes" and thank you for saying in a little bit more words than I deem necessary that there isn't.

Yes, it's called IBM DB2 V8 "Codes" reference.

It's a thriller from cover to cover. I don't want to spoil the ending, but you won't believe what can happen to your network packets!!!

Get a 55 Gallon drum of cocoa a cord of wood, curl up in your favorite chair with a roaring fire and you have some good times ahead.

Sorry, I could not resist. There are thousands of codes and to create a quick ref of the 5-10 common codes (00C90101, 00C90080, etc) would lead to out-dated doc that probably will be poorly translated. If you don't understand what a reason code means, you really need to read the manual and understand the implications of each message. Also, every once in a while go back and RTFM just to see if anything has changes (yup, doc gets even better..so, you need another drum of cocoa for the V9 Codes :)

This is truly a case where RTFM should be the rule. I've been doing this for a few years and the "A" word really applies here. "Always" Look to the manual to discover the meaning of a return code. The standard DBA, "IT Depends", does not apply.

Re: AW: [DB2-L] [DB2] DB2 9 for z/OS - which Reason Codes go with SQLCODE -904 ?
(in response to Ruediger Kurtz)
I would like to offer another question of a similar form which has application development implications.

Which SQLCODES cause a rollback and where is this completely documented?

Some of the M&C information will tell, such as a Deadlock/Timeout, (-911) however, a DL/TO of SQLCODE -913 does not.

This would help developers / designers determine when / if they should put in 'retry' logic; which of course is right next to the call/perform for the DSNTIAR/DSNTIAC paragraph to display the diagnostics that make debugging easier.

Ahh, the search for the developer's grail and El Dorado continues.

Thank you for your indulgence.

Re: AW: [DB2-L] [DB2] DB2 9 for z/OS - which Reason Codes go with SQLCODE -904 ?
(in response to Gary L Joehlin)
Proper retry logic for an application that updates DB2 is extremely difficult to do correctly.

I worked with a developer for two weeks before he was able to make his app fully bullet proof. You have to create / maintain special unit of work tables and then figure out how you are going to process (skip the unit of work and come back or re-position/retry the unit right there).

Btw, the code to handle the retry was VERY complex and made the program much more difficult to maintain. Please keep this in mind before tackling unit of work retry. Also, consider your weakest DB2 developer...no, not him .. yes, that guy over there...imagine HIM making a mod to this complex code.

My 2¢.

Re: AW: [DB2-L] [DB2] DB2 9 for z/OS - which Reason Codes go with SQLCODE -904 ?
(in response to Richard Fazio)
Start here: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/dzichelp/v2r2/index.jsp
Choose your version of DB2 in the search scope.
Put -904 in the search and click Go.

I used DB2 9 only and got 170 references. Most look like reason codes. Of
course, we can get new ones for this code.
