z/OS: DB2 9: Usage of Visual Explain with DB2 Version 9
Hello,

In our company we have many application programmers using Visual Explain with DB2 Version 8. The most of them are happy with that tool and don't want to change to Optimization Service center.

My questions: is it possible to work with Visual Explain under Version 9 ("in a toleration mode") or is it really impossible to work with Visual Explain under Version 9.

Best regards

(in response to Norbert Wolf)
Visual Explain works in both V9 CM and NFM mode.
It is not clear to us yet if everything works in V9.
So far, we did not get complaints from our users.

I'm not sure what the IBM position is on whether or not this is "supported", but Visual Explain seems to work fine in DB2 9 even in NFM as long as you don't expect it to do Version 9 stuff like showing histogram stats, etc. I've encountered a couple of explains that just don't seem to work, but on the whole it seems to be OK.

OSC is indeed a very heavy tool that would be hard to roll out to hundreds of developers. I'd be interested in hearing from IBM on the future of the explain toolset since pieces of VE also seem to be appearing in the Data Studio products. It would be nice to have a "lite" version that could be easily deployed on a large scale. We are dealing with a free set of tools so we may be limited in how much we can complain :)
