This is all very interesting. In the DB2 Version 9.1 install manual it
says
the following about early (ERLY) code:

"If your system is at the prerequisite maintenance level, your Version 8
early code is upward compatible with Version 9.1. The Version 9.1 early
code
is downward compatible with Version 8."

And the Version 8 manual said:

"If your system is at the prerequisite maintenance level, your Version 7
early code is upward compatible with Version 8. The Version 8 early code
is
downward compatible with Version 7."

Being somewhat cautious I've always suspected that these statements imply
that early code that that is compatible with Version 9.1 and Version 8 is
not necessarily compatible with Version 7.

So far living with this implied restriction has been workable for us - it
has been convenient to spread or DB2 sub-systems around LPARs. The times
are changing and we will soon be in a position where running three
versions
of DB2 in one LPAR would be quite handy (customers, customers).

So, have we been too cautious?

The usual and any other convenient disclaimers apply...
