Bala,

You can find the information about DIS UTF8 in the manual 'z/OS V1.R10. ISPF User's Guide Vol II', and it works in our z/OS 1.10 system.
Unfortunately I cannot find the manual that mentions whether it was already available in the previous releases of z/OS.

Re: AW: [DB2-L] Display OF V8 DBRM Its All Greek to me!
(in response to David Seibert)
On our z/OS 1.8 system, to get display to work in BROWSE/ViEW I had to select the 'browse' mode. Plain old view rejected the display command in any form.
Display UNICODE failed because conversion services apparently is improperly configured. Not sure what is missing but that is a game for tomorrow.
I was able to see what I needed though.
Thanks to everyone for the great assist.

In browse they work for me on zos 1.7. If you do a DIS with no parms, you get an error. You then can hit PF1 and it will show you the allowable parms.

Betreff: [DB2-L] Display OF V8 DBRM Its All Greek to me!

Hi everyone.
For my own sneaky reasons I want to read a DBRM. However, they are now in UNICODE so my terminal emulator translates the text into ancient greek.
Any suggestions on how we could display the text.
Thanks.

To do a search of a UNICODE DBRM, from the command line enter:

F 'searchstring'C UTF8

As well, note that the searchstring is case sensitive.

As far as I know the support for this functionality was introduced with OA07685 in 2004 (applicable to z/OS 1.4 and up). We are at z/OS 1.9.
It might be possible that some option has to be enabled in addition to be at the right level of z/OS. I would consult with your z/OS system programmers.

Using ISPF at our company I browse the DBRM and the say DIS EBCDIC in the command line and you'll see the DBRM as if it would be in EBCDIC.

Thanks.

Edward Long

May I drop in with a little clarification here?

UNICODE and UTF8 are not the same thing:
UTF8 is just one "face" of UNICODE, and it's the one used by the DBRM (and
by the catalog as well).
Actually, UTF8 is one of the possible byte encodings to represent the
numeric character codes of UNICODE, called codepoints. It represents the
first 127 characters of UNICODE (including all non-accented letters, digits,
and most punctuation) using a single byte (with high-bit equal to 0), while
all other characters are represented by at least 2 bytes (of which the first
one has its high-bit set to 1).

This explains why "DISPLAY ASCII" also (seems to) work: if you just have
non-accented letters, digits and some punctuation in the text fields or the
column/table names in your SQL, all of these have UNICODE codepoints < 128,
so one character will be one byte in UTF8, and it will be identical to the
way any ASCII encoding would represent it.
From the moment you start having e.g. accented letters like éèçàùñ, or the
Euro sign, Greek characters, Chinese, Arabic, etc., "DISPLAY ASCII" will
show two or more characters (= two or more bytes) where there is actually
just one character! "DISPLAY UTF8" does *not* have this problem.
Anglosaxons won't typically be confronted with this difference (at least,
not yet...) since English text rarely contains accents and the like. Others
won't be confronted with it in SQL outside single or double quotes. The
latter is only present for text constants or table/column names or aliases.
So once people start using column or alias names like "TÉLÉPHONE" and the
like, you will start seeing 2 bytes between the T and the L when using
"DISPLAY ASCII", not when using "DISPLAY UTF8".
Final caveat: not all UNICODE characters will be displayable on your ISPF
screen; depending on the codepage setting of your 3270 connection and of
ISPF, some of the multibyte UTF8 characters would display incorrectly (and
maybe DISPLAY UTF8 would give a "Conversion failed" error; I didn't test
this). E.g., suppose you have codepage 500 or 87, you would encounter this
problem with the Euro sign, with Greek characters, with the Polish l-bar,
etc. (but characters like éèçàùñ would display correctly).

Three other encodings for UNICODE are UTF16, UTF32 and UCS2. The reason why
"DISPLAY UNICODE" give a "Conversion error" is because it means UCS2, not UTF8.
Actually, "DISPLAY UTF8" is a shortcut for "DISPLAY CCSID 1208",
"DISPLAY UNICODE" is a shortcut for "DISPLAY CCSID 17584", and "DISPLAY
UTF16" for "DISPLAY CCSID 1200".

No, that's not the problem; thy "DISPLAY UTF8" instead.
(See my earlier post for more details on this.)
