Rebuild Pending on Index
(in response to Mark Labby)

What are the ramifications of creating an index with DEFER YES and not immediately rebuilding the index?

The new index is put into REBUILD PENDING.   Neither the table nor any previously existing index is placed into any special status, so should be fully accessible.  Has anyone had any issues or things to consider if the index creates actually occur a few days before the building of the index?

Normally we have been creating the indices deferred, followed by a Reorg Tablespace - which can be Shrlevel Change, so no outage.  Our reorg window, even with Shrlevel Change is pretty much confined to a few hours on Sunday morning.  When we do other data model changes, the create index is added to the list of changes and the reorg jobs start immediately after.  I have some new indices required and no other changes to occur, so rather than putting them in Sunday morning I was considering doing the create on Friday and just letting the reorg occur on Sunday as usual. ===== This message contains privileged and confidential information intended for the above addressees only. Re: Rebuild Pending on Index

One issue I encountered in the past was that,
as soon as I created the index with DEFER YES,
an existing CICS transaction could no longer
insert rows into the table, because the new index's
status of REBUILD PENDING prevented the insert.

Not user if that was on V6 or v7, but be careful. Do
you have a test environment where you can try it ?

Re: Rebuild Pending on Index

Mark, as REBUILD PENDING is a restrictive state you wont be able to modify
the table - no Inserts/Updates/Deletes. Obviously if your table is read only
that wont be a problem.
