DB2-L Digest - 16 Nov 2010 to 17 Nov 2010 (#2010-311)
Please excuse me if I am doing this incorrectly but it is the first time I
have used DB2-L. There is a delegate doing a DB2 Admin course with us this
week who has a requirement for some contract assistance with a project. The
title is 'DB29 for Linux: High availability using Tivoli System Automation
and NetApp FAS or IBM Nseries Storage System'. The reference document of the
same title (ref TR-3492) is
available on the NetApp website. Are any of you DB2 experts able to help us
please?

Bob and others who use tape,
You should be aware of that the outage in the switch phase when the reorg
drains the tablespace will be elongated due to the use of tape devices (or
VTS). The reason is that the drain will not be released until the Image Copy
datasets is secured and this will happen after the deallocation of the Image
copy. My experience is that this will delay the unavailability for claimers
with 10 - 30 seconds!
In our shop we now take all inline Image copies in reorgs to dasd and we
have dramatically reduced the number of timeouts in applications during
online reorg.
Does anyone have other experiences?

Esteemed IDUG EMEA 2010 attendees

First THANK YOU all for your attendance at IDUG EMEA 2010 ! I hope you
enjoyed the many presentations offered , the news about DB2 10 (book,
GA,more details....), as well as Hands-on labs, seminars, free
certifications (BTW Congratulations ! Many of you passed exams, we had a
very high number of new certified folks !) and the overview of products
offered by vendor in our expo area.

Another big 'THANKS' to all DB2 collegues and experts who attended THREAD
'A' - DB2 10 for z/OS, BTW the thread I (tried to) managed. It was not an
easy task, we always had rooms full of attendees and we worked hard to let
people find a seat or attend that particular session, it was mandatory
for us to do everything for them. Hope you enjoyed italian chocolats,
Baci Perugina should have been a nice 'medicine' during sessions.......
and during SIG01, the Special Interest Group in thread A. Thank you all so
much for the very good evaluations received for that SIG. I only tried to
do something useful for all of us, but most of credit goes to the great
and absolutely brilliant speakers, I was only a less than useless piece of
'furniture' in the room :-).

Thanks to all DB2- L listers I met in Vienna and who didn't try to beat me
:-). It was a great pleasure for me to associate a face to a name,
finally. All recognized DB2-L as a great source for informations about
DB2, so keep to 'advertise' it among others collegues, some of them didn't
know anything about our list.

A big 'Thanks ! ' to people who applied as moderator for thread A:

Frank Petersen
Meir Zohar
Ulf Heinrich
Roy Boxwell
Bayard Tysor
Steve Thomas
Namik Hrle
Zeljen Stanic

A special recognition and 'Thanks !' to Tor Roger Loken, who moderated
three speakers.

So IDUG EMEA 2010 is over. They're planning next Conference, in Prague, so
stay tuned. DB2 10 now is GA and first users are migrating to this version
so next year they'll have beta testers and first users experience. If
you're thinking to apply as volunteer, do it, it's a great experience and
something unique in a DB2 expert's life. If you don't volunteer another
easy task is to apply as moderator, you really do something useful for the
Conference with a minimum effort (and attendig sessions, of course).

So with the hope we did at least a respectable work, again, *thank you
all*.

Hi all,

Well, I know I am a few days late, but as you can imagine last week was
somewhat hectic for those of us involved in the IDUG organisation - but I
would like to take a few moments to finish my Vienna musings with my
thoughts

There will be some final eMails from IDUG headquarters soon, covering the
"end of term" report for IDUG EMEA, but for now let me just say it was
really good to see so many of you in Vienna last week. Not only were the
registration numbers very good, aspects such as the DB2 certification
examinations exceeded our expectations (and congratulations to everyone who
achieved their DB2 certification last week)

The exhibition area was busy each time it was open, with some very
interesting showings from our vendors and exhibitors. Whilst I am in "thank
you" mode, I do need to take a moment to express my gratitude to all
exhibitors who provided prizes for the various give-aways which were offered
during the week. Well done to those of you who won prizes either as part of
the Passport for Prizes, the VSP Lottery or whatever - I hope you find them
useful and will remind you of your time at IDUG EMEA

I'd also like to take a moment to thank my colleagues on the IDUG EMEA
planning committee - without the hard work of these volunteers there would
not even BE an IDUG conference - it was an honour working with you all. If
anyone reading this is interested in also volunteering to assist IDUG, take
a look here < http://www.idug.org/volunteer/volunteering.html > for details of
the areas you can volunteer (and the form to complete to indicate your
interest!)

Well, that's about it from me. I hope these weekly Vienna musings have been
both interesting and helpful.

Look out for my Prague musings in 2011 and I'm looking forward to another
exciting IDUG EMEA conference next November

Hi Max!

Thanks for the thanks - It was, as always, a pleasure to be there and I
finally got the beer for Terry!
As to the algorythm its very simple:

N = Number of people
C = Number of chairs
T = Time of the presentation (In UTC of course)
A = What is the presentation About (Reduced from ppt or doc file into a
hash value)lamb
B = Number of beers consumed at the party the night before divided by the
number of lamb chops and weird desserts eaten

then the formula is simply:

The room is never big enough!

See you in Prague!

Application Performance - Tuning, Trending and Testing

It seems to be a constant battle to ensure that DB2 applications are running
at their optimum efficiency and speed, but what are the factors that affect
this efficiency? This presentation looks briefly at those aspects of
application coding, development and execution that have a bearing on the
overall performance.
Note: Cogito reserves the right to deny attendance at its sole discretion
and it is preferred that attendees register using a company email address
and not a generic email address such as gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc.
But what if it's really not the applications fault? How do you determine,
before embarking on lengthy analysis, that the problem really IS one you can
fix from a DB2 perspective. We'll also look at why it is important to build
a performance database that easily allows comparisons between "now" and
"then".
The performance database can also prove invaluable in determining trends in
performance - perhaps even allowing problems to be highlighted and resolved
BEFORE they cause major impacts.
Phil Graingers talk will be followed by a short (15 minute) product overview
by Sally Fabian of CogitoNA.

Hi Roy !

Yes probably you're right about algorithm but neverthless I'd like to see
if we can have an idea about 'attendees migration' from one room to
another :-)

Probably, for many reasons, I won't be in Prague (so expect someone else's
advertising about IDUG 2011), but from what I saw from plans I can say
it'll be even more bettere than Vienna, from presentations to hotels
choices to logistic. So stay tuned & ready for Prague, they are working
for another great Conference !

Thank you again and Kind Regards

Phil, thanks to you and all the IDUG EMEA planning committee. It was
quite obvious the work everyone

did, and the busy times during the week. All of your efforts before and
during sure paid off because the

conference seemed very smooth from the attendees, speakers, and
moderators side.

Great conference, great speakers, and great city. I look forward to
Prague and hopefully will be back as

a speaker again next year.

Hi all,

Well, I know I am a few days late, but as you can imagine last week was
somewhat hectic for those of us involved in the IDUG organisation - but
I would like to take a few moments to finish my Vienna musings with my

There will be some final eMails from IDUG headquarters soon, covering

I'd also like to take a moment to thank my colleagues on the IDUG EMEA

would not even BE an IDUG conference - it was an honour working with you
all. If anyone reading this is interested in also volunteering to assist
IDUG, take a look here < http://www.idug.org/volunteer/volunteering.html >
for details of the areas you can volunteer (and the form to complete to

Well, that's about it from me. I hope these weekly Vienna musings have
been both interesting and helpful.

Look out for my Prague musings in 2011 and I'm looking forward to
another exciting IDUG EMEA conference next November

If
anyone reading this is interested in also volunteering to assist IDUG, take
a look here < http://www.idug.org/volunteer/volunteering.html > for details
of the areas you can volunteer (and the form to complete to indicate your
interest!)

Well, that's about it from me. I hope these weekly Vienna musings have been
both interesting and helpful.

Look out for my Prague musings in 2011 and I'm looking forward to another
exciting IDUG EMEA conference next November

Olle
