Hi,

I assume you're referring "User Speakers".

Because of various reasons such as "Do more with less" trend in
organizations, DBAs and technical people are highly overloaded and have
less time to submit/prepare presentations and allocate time for being
speakers. Less Budget for training activities is also affecting them to
demand travel and lodging for conferences although IDUG is waiving
conference fee.

Re: DUG EMEA 2010 Vienna - A very personal view
(in response to Cuneyt Goksu)
Hi

<IDUG EMEA mode on>

I can speak about thread A as I was thread chair and you replied to the
mail I sent to DB2-L..

It's a little bit hard to bring user experience for DB2 10 when GA was
announced few weeks before Conference and you've to respect
non-disclosure agreement. And before summer 2010 you had no idea about the
end of beta period. So the only speakers you can have are IBMers who have
enough informations and are allowed to discuss them in detail. Neverthless
we were able to bring one user (a great speaker,Suresh Sane from DST
Systems) and we could have had more user speakers but non-disclosure
agreement prevented them to present in Vienna. On the other hand who has
any experience on new HASH ACCESS (a very appreciated session from *users*
with a great speaker) ?? This is the main reason for DB2 10. There were
some beta tester in Vienna but of course they could't speak about DB2 10.
Some of them are planning to present at IDUG EMEA 2011 in Prague and there
for sure next CPC will have more user sessions about this topic.

That said, the whole Conference had many users presentations and from my
point of view *some* consultants can be considered as users to all intents
and purposes. I provide some examples: Dan Luksetich is a well-known
consultant but one of his session was quite close to a user presentation
as he discussed about real cases and solutions (for example SOUNDEX usage,
statistic about names...). Cristian Molaro worked on real cases as well
and not in a lab environment. Just to say two names. For them WAD isn't an
answer to their problems as for msot users. SIG are 'thought' to discuss
with users and experts as well and there were many users. At the very end
I can say that there was a lot of interest in IDUG EMEA 2010.

On the other hand some users submit the same presentations for some years
or abstracts dealing with DB2 in a (very) limited manner so we cannot
accept these presentations for the grid.
*YOU ALL* pay for new and useful informations not for 'fluff'
presentations. This is another reason to add to the others cited by
Cuneyt.

< IDUG EMEA mode off>

<User mode on>

Historically I saw a decrease in user presentation at IDUG european
conferences. This is due to a slow decline in mainframe installations (in
Italy it's quite clear), to people overloaded by work and to the problems
a user has if he's selected. For instance I'd have liked to write some
presentations about the work I did on bufferpools and IFCID 6/7, about
tests on utilities , about DB2 and Time Series to 'predict' future
workload and about the many works I did in 16+ years, but I'd have had no
support from my company. For IDUG EMEA Conference I used my own holidays
days. Instead to stay in a sunny beach I was in Vienna bringing chair from
one room to another and helping people to attend the session they desired.

We had many drop-outs for this reason, company can't pay expenses for your
stay in the city of the conference. If you want me to indicate the main
reason, here you are and in these last 2 years it become by far more
urgent. There's no money ('No ghe se schei' in Venetian dialect).

Anyway I think in next IDUG EMEA they'll try to offer some help for this
problem so stay tuned.

<User mode off>

Of course it's a persona opionion but it comes from different informations
I have/had.

Re: DUG EMEA 2010 Vienna - A very personal view
(in response to Max Scarpa)

No, I don't know of a better DB2 event than IDUG.

Right, we had only 15 user sessions - maybe less than in previous years. And I myself would definitely love to see a few more of these at the next conference. But as Cuneyt points out, it's a lot more difficult to get companies into funding for time and efforts of their employess to write IDUG presentations. Pity, but there we are.

On the other hand, it's also not easy for today's DBAs to get even IDUG conference paid. Still, if you hand in a good presentation and get your conference fee waived, you're in a *much* better position for this discussion with your boss. Next year's education budget won't be much higher than it was this year...

And most of you guys do have a wealth of practical experience. This is invaluable information for all of us! Why not pack up your best topic into an IDUG presentation? Very often, a lot of the information is already there - project documentation or whatever. And you probably can reuse your IDUG presentation in-house. Therefore, a good part of your effort is limited to restructuring your existing documentation. Affordable - and it pays back! Not only for you, also for the conference attendees.

IMHO, you don't need to be at the latest version of DB2 - such topics are covered (over-)sufficiently with IBM presentations. I personally would like to hear from your *real life* experience; be it application projects, troubleshooting approaches, platform migrations, infrastructure setups, cost savings initiatives, exploitation of a specific technology, whatever... Simply all that good stuff that will allow me to extend my own knowledge and adapt best practices for my own daily work.

Therefore, I would like to encourage you all to share your experience at IDUG - as you already do on listserv! And I'm looking forward to great future conferences - thanks to the users!

Just my personal view,
Peter
