Re: Buffer Manager error
(in response to Srinivas Gopala)
Hi

It seems a dataset/VSAM error (from eror code), not a subsystem problem.
Did you check FARCMRX.DSNDBC.FARCMRN2.NDTL.I0001.A001 existence (simply
from ISPF 3.4) ? Maybe you've only the cluster (ie ICF catalog) entry, not
data component. It happened to me when I started a Db2 in our soapbox
when Db2 tried to open all tablespace but I copy only DB2 cat/dir.

Assuming you’ve got image copies you could delete the cluster and Recover to current. Or if you don’t give a monkey’s about the data, just Load Replace it with a dummy file. Depends on your priorities; fixing the situation or understanding where it’s come from.

Good luck.

Re: Buffer Manager error

Hi

As I suspected it seems a SMS error, not DB2. Dyn alloc failed but this is
due to the fact that dataset probably as a complete ICF catalog struccture
but you're missing physical file. Probably SMSstorage group lost some dasd
volume.

Probably from ISPF 3.4 you can see all the entries related to that
dataset. Take note of the volume where it resides and check if it's seen
by SMS with your DASD folks. Check if someone did some modification to
that SMS storage group. In my opinion it's not necessary a DB2 restart.
And as many subsystem are affected I'd go to SMS boys to beat them,
probably.

See for example:

DB2 Systems Programming Tools of the Trade by Linda
Hagedorn NA IDUG 2007 (reporting a similar problem)

There you've some SMS commands to check if SMS is OK.

Re: Buffer Manager error

It's easy to check if volume is offline with SMS commands. Or if you've
DITTO (or a similar program) you can easily check if you can browse the
VSAM file. If yes, volume is online and accesible.

If your Db2 datasets are SMS managed VCAT should be '*' (asterisk) so it
seems strange someone put the wrong VCAT,but of course it depends on your
DASD structure.

Let us know what was the problem when resolved. Just to learn.

It's easy to check if volume is offline with SMS commands. Or if you've DITTO (or a similar program) you can easily check if you can browse the VSAM file. If yes, volume is online and accesible.

If your Db2 datasets are SMS managed VCAT should be '*' (asterisk) so it seems strange someone put the wrong VCAT,but of course it depends on your DASD structure.

Let us know what was the problem when resolved. Just to learn.

Is this Z/OS 1.12 ? we have seen reports of dynamic allocation failures on other DBMs under 1.12 – just a thought

I would like to know why this is happening since more than one subsystem is affected due to this error.

Thanks & Regards,

Re: Buffer Manager error

Try something like an IDCAMS PRINT or DSN1PRNT of a few pages of the dataset – just to see if it really IS where the catalog says it is
Don’t forget, LISTCAT and 3.4 only show what the ICF catalogs (think they) know about a dataset

Thanks for the pointers. I am thinking that the developers have given wrong VCAT names between subsystems , but checked SYSSTOGROUP table but no such mistake is done.
Anyway , I will dig into SMS .

Hi

As I suspected it seems a SMS error, not DB2. Dyn alloc failed but this is due to the fact that dataset probably as a complete ICF catalog struccture but you're missing physical file. Probably SMSstorage group lost some dasd volume.

Probably from ISPF 3.4 you can see all the entries related to that dataset. Take note of the volume where it resides and check if it's seen by SMS with your DASD folks. Check if someone did some modification to that SMS storage group. In my opinion it's not necessary a DB2 restart. And as many subsystem are affected I'd go to SMS boys to beat them, probably.

See for example:

DB2 Systems Programming Tools of the Trade by Linda Hagedorn NA IDUG 2007 (reporting a similar problem)

There you've some SMS commands to check if SMS is OK.

Hi Srinivas

Thank you for your infos. It seems a recurrent problem as I'm sure in the
past I heard something about this solution. See for instance

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg1II04309

But as usual I never stop to learn.
