[FLUFF] No one can afford two

Avram Friedman

[FLUFF] No one can afford two
Many IDUG listers include this quote when they sign a note
"Nobody knows what a DBA does but everybody has to have one, because nobody can afford two." (from "The IT Menagerie", IBM Systems Journal, circa 1990)

I think the quote dates back to the early late 70s perhaps as recent as the early 80's.

Here in lies the problem
The term DBA in the quote is not a reference to a DB2 DBA. Even in the early 90's one could almost say DB2 did not exist.
Of course this is 100% true of any thing before 1983.

So what happened in the last 30 years?
Has effective compensation been reduced so the large shops can now have two DBAs?
Do we now know what these people do?
and why is the quote so popular on the IDUG LISTSERV? esp if it is not about DB2 DBAs.

Let me start out with one persons view, Please add your own.

DB2 was a threat to the DBA proffession.
A, the Optomizer reduced the need for careful monitoring of access paths (please note the word is reduced not eliminated)
B. Tightly bound catalog reduced the exposure for running programs (plans) and databases (tables) of being out of SYNC
C. SQL DCL was eaiser than customizing assembler macros to do PSB, DBD and ACB GENS (what ever those are)
D. Many configuration changes like adding a table could be done dynamicly and do not require a scheduled outage.

So what is it about DBAs, have we learned anything?

Dont know about the rest of the list but my wife still has no idea what I
do....at party's I have given up saying "DBA" as the faces just glaze over
and so I say "Programmer". Everyone knows what a programmer is and
sometimes people then ask "Iphone apps?" and I responds with a wry smile
and simply say "Mainframe apps" and then once in my life two guys blew
breath out slowly and said "Wow! A *real* programmer" - That made my year

Does that really answer the question? No it doesnt but it shows that all
that has really happened is the rise of "programmer" and the general
complexity of a DBAs life has not changed an iota...okay I admit it I do
not miss PSBGENS one single bit but wrestling with the optimizer is like
nailing fog to a tree on a dark night sometimes...the phrase "Vodoo Code"
has been heard sometimes....

Right enough of this I am off home for large amounts of cold german Beer!
Feel free to join me in the ether for some beers at about 20:00 GMT. First
round is on me and then Ray pays the rest!

Re: [FLUFF] No one can afford two

I generally call myself a "Database geek" and usually people laugh and accept it. Not long ago, the father of one of my son's friends responded, "Oh, a DBA!" and I learned that he was a senior app developer for an insurance company. But otherwise, yeah, more precise is generally less appreciated...
