Presenter: Linda Claussen, Themis, Inc.
DB2 10 for z/OS allows you to make changes to database objects (indexes and table spaces) while maximizing the availability of the altered objects. > Improved Availability
* Online Schema Changes
* Pending Definition Changes
* Rotate Partitions
> Improved Performance
* Hash Access

This session maps out the Pre-Migration, Migration & Post Migration steps required for a successful and stress free migration from DB2 8 or DB2 9 to DB2 10. It discusses the various responsibilities and potential problems that can be encountered during migration. Developing and following a systematic migration plan can speed up your migration and make you migration project more successful.Key issues in any migration plan is the identification of what's NOT supported in the new release and what's NEW that can impact my deliverables.
Note: Take the time it takes so it takes less time.
.
Topics Covered:
> Phases of Migrating DB2 for z/OS
> Enhancements vs. New Functions
> Pre-Migration
> Migration
> Post Migration

2:30-3:45 "I Didn't Know DB2 Did That!"- this is a sample of this class
Presenter: Bonnie Baker, Bonnie Baker Corporation

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside DB2 when your SQL is being executed? This seminar is designed to answer exactly that question and more by taking an advanced look at DB2 Components and the Optimizer's instructions for various SQL access paths. While simple paths will be reviewed, this class will focus on those difficult to understand access paths and answer questions like:
1.

When does a RIDPOOL failure NOT result in a Tablespace Scan?
2. What happens during a Hybrid Join and what is a "Type C" Hybrid Join?
3. Why (today) do I need to code both a GROUP BY and an ORDER BY on the same columns to insure that my GROUPs are returned in ORDER?
4. How can a 64-partition DPSI be used for SORT Avoidance?
5. If DB2 does not lock indexes, how does DB2 know if Index-Only data is "clean" or "dirty"?
6. Exactly when are result sets built at OPEN CURSOR?
7. Which DSNZPARMs affect access path selection and operation?
8. And much, much more!
With this advanced knowledge, designing indexes and tuning SQL will be a lot easier and a whole lot less confusing.

3:45-4:00 Closing

I do hope you can make the meeting.

Watch for emails on the Class being held December 8th (day after the RUG meeting) - with Bonnie Baker - The Best of Things I Wish They'd Told Me for Developers - Fee based ($160).

10:30-11:45 "DB2 for z/OS Migration Planning Survival Guide"
Presenter: Linda Claussen, Themis, Inc.

* Phases of Migrating DB2 for z/OS
* Enhancements vs. New Functions
* Pre-Migration
* Migration
* Post Migration

11:45 -12:45 Lunch - Sponsored By: Gunning Technology Solutions LLC & Bonnie Baker Incorporated.

12:45-2:15 - "TBA - Cross platform - or - LUW based presentation"
Presenter: Phil Gunning, Gunning Technology Solutions LLC
2:15-2:30 Break

9:00-10:15 " DB2 10 for z/OS: If You Don’t Like It ALTER It”
Presenter: Linda Claussen, Themis, Inc.
DB2 10 for z/OS allows you to make changes to database objects (indexes and
table spaces) while maximizing the availability of the altered objects.
Through enhancements to ALTER statements, you can now change indexes and
table spaces without having to unload the data, drop and re-create the
objects, regenerate all of the security authorizations, re-create the
views, and reload the data. This session explores the Schema Enhancements
introduced in DB2 10 that impact performance and availability using
examples tested on our sandbox subsystem.

Objectives:
Describe the enhanced ALTER statement capabilities and how Online
Schema Changes are implemented in DB2 10 for z/OS
Develop, Test and Implement procedures to change table space, table
and index characteristics to improve performance and usability
Review the strengths and limitations of Online Schema Changes
Topics Covered:
Improved Availability
Online Schema Changes
Pending Definition Changes
Rotate Partitions
Improved Performance
Hash Access
Additional non-key columns in a unique-index
