Deb Kumar,

I’m not aware of anyone leaving a z/OS server, with or without DB2, available for practice.

You might be able to enroll in a course which uses DB2 on a mainframe, remotely (if the college in question allows such), and practice that way. Marist College (www.marist.edu<http://www.marist.edu>) does have a mainframe developer curriculum/program. I don’t know anything about their costs, seasons, course names, or whether they allow students by telepresence.

Hello Deb,
No one seems to be asking the burning question, Why ?
For more than two decades it has been the “conventional wisdom” that the mainframe is a dying platform,
even long before the OS was named z/OS.
So, what then is motivating you to seek out and learn DB2 for z/OS ?

Unfortunately, I agree with the others that you are not likely to find any z/OS server with DB2 available to practice on.
Most, if not all DB2 for z/OS shops have such a ‘sandbox’ system available for their own internal folks to try out things,
but it is highly unlikely that it would be available outside of their own intranet.

Want to learn DB2 z/os
(in response to Kirk Hampton)
Also no-one has mentioned that if Deb is new to z/OS altogether then basic
training in z/OS, JCL, TSO, ISPF, using a 3270 terminal emulator etc will
all be pre-reqs to learning DB2 for z/OS.
People have occasionally given public access to their mainframe systems and
I know of one on-line system, but their DB2 is currently broken and there
are serious restrictions on what can be done on their system.
Good Luck Deb. It's good to see some people are actually still interested
in the mainframe.
Cheers,
Mick.

RE: Want to learn DB2 z/os
(in response to Kirk Hampton)

I have wondered this for a LONG time.  It's interesting to me that Microsoft has great free online tools (MS Virtual Academy) for learning technology, but IBM keeps everything a secret. I just wish IBM would offer something like this.
