DB2 z/OS data sharing - system automation and restart light

hey y'all,

recommendation to have SA in place so that in case of an LPAR becoming unavailable, we restart "light" on a different LPAR in the sysplex.

Who is doing it already, and can you ask your local friendly automation person how they have implemented that in detail, please?

feel free to contact me also offline if preferred.

Thanks.

Aurora,
Hey, my friend!!! Great to see you’re doing well.

Not my normal range of expertise, but there are some CF parms you have to have in place so the swap over is seamless. I’ll let the experts answer your question – I just wanted to say ‘HI & that I’m still hanging in here!’

Hope to keep in touch!

You would typically use arm to do this. this is also typically done by MVS team.

Install / Migration guide has a section explaining how to create an ARM policy.
The redbook titled "SAP on DB2 UDB for OS/390 and z/OS:
High Availability Solution Using System Automation" has some samples you can use. Parallel sysplex best practices is another reference.

RESTART_GROUP(<restartgrp1>)      some name for policy
     TARGET_SYSTEM(SYSB,SYSA)
     RESTART_PACING(15)

     ELEMENT(<zparm_grp_name>ssid1)
      RESTART_ATTEMPTS(2)
      RESTART_TIMEOUT(300)
      READY_TIMEOUT(500)
      TERMTYPE(ALLTERM)
      RESTART_METHOD(SYSTERM,STC,'<CRCSSID1> STA DB2,LIGHT(YES)')

     ELEMENT(<irlmgrp><IRLMssID1><irlmmemberid>)
      RESTART_ATTEMPTS(0)
     RESTART_GROUP(<restartgrp2>)   some name for policy
      TARGET_SYSTEM(SYSA,SYSB)
      RESTART_PACING(15)

       ELEMENT(<zparm_grp_name>ssid2)
        RESTART_ATTEMPTS(2)
        RESTART_TIMEOUT(300)
        READY_TIMEOUT(500)
        TERMTYPE(ALLTERM)
        RESTART_METHOD(SYSTERM,STC,'<CRCSSID2> STA DB2,LIGHT(YES)')
(add options such as noindoubt as you feel fit )

       ELEMENT(<irlmgrp><IRLMssid2><irlm member id2>)
        RESTART_ATTEMPTS(0)

you concatenate the irlm grp name, ssid and the member id. If cics is involved you may have to think about whether it will move along with db2 or not.

I agree with Venkat’s suggestion. We use ARM and it’s worked well in the very rare case when we had an LPAR issue that required DB2 to be started another LPAR to free the retained locks. We only use ARM for a full LPAR failure while we rely on our automation package to handle restarts for DB2 subsystem failures (ARM can manage both if you want.)

Aurora

There are some good slides on this topic in John Campbell's Greatest Hits, War Stories and Best Practice 2016 (Session A14) from IDUG EMEA 2016 Brussels.  I recommend you to check it out...

thanks Andy - I can't actually access the conference content, I am not sure if it's my problem or a server problem - he relayed the same presentation at IDUG AU 2016 and I can't download it.

Meh.
