Tool/product for reading SMF data

Hi All,

Can anyone please suggest good tool/product that can read the SMF data and present to the end user in a proper readable/graphical format?

Also, please share your experiences with the tool/product you are using.

There are lots of tools out there. It really depends on what you want to use the data for.

Syncsort has Ironstream which gathers the SMF data in real time and offloads it to Splunk, where, using their search and presentation engines the data can be presented in many ways. Ironstream can also collect lots of other information in real time.

We also recently acquired Metron-Athene which does off-line SMF and capacity planning reporting. See www.metron-athene.com http://www.metron-athene.com

I will let the other vendors speak for themselves.

Hi Bharath,

What kind of SMF data? Db2 only, or also RMF, CICS, MQ, etc?

Best regards,

Hi Bharath,

Sorry for the double post, I accidentally clicked send before the mail was finished.

IBM offers several tools to read and interpret SMF data.

Specifically for Db2 there is Omegamon XE for Db2 Performance Expert (OMPE). It can read SMF data and produce various outputs, for example, textual reports, CSV files for import into Excel, and Db2 load format for loading into Db2 and/or IDAA.

Depending on your specific requirements the following tools can also read SMF data:

  • QMF Enterprise Edition or QMF for z/OS -- can also do graphical presentation of the data
  • IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for loading into your IDAA. Then use your favourite BI tools to present data
  • IBM Platform for Apache Spark for z/OS -- write Spark programs or use Jupyter notebooks to manipulate and present data. It also has machine learning extensions.
  • ... and IBM has several other tools in this space.

I suggest you contact your local IBM representative to get a dialogue started. You can also contact me off-list and I may be able to give you some local contacts.

Best regards,

Jørn Thyssen

You might be interested in EasySMF:JE which is a Java API for SMF data.
It has classes to map DB2 type 100 and 101 records, plus many other
record types including CICS.

I am the vendor, so please feel free to contact me directly if you have
questions.

Hi Bharath,

If you CA tools, you can use CA SYSVIEW for Db2 (former Insight DPM) for processing Db2 SMF data. The product provides many reports out of the box (https://docops.ca.com/ca-sysview-db2/20/en/reference/batch-reports) and allows building the custom ones.

Thanks,
Denis

This is not a DB2 question. There are tools (SAS/MXG SAS/MICS) that can create reports from SMF

ICETOOL by DFSORT

SYNCTOOL by DFSORT and so much more

You may wish to post on IBMMAIN for more tools that can do this

What SMF Records? What type of reports?
